Re: Croatia (Istrian Peninsular) Small Whites

I'd say that looks good for Southern Small White, I think Thanks for your prompt reply Paul I reckon that's malvae , Steve. No line of small, white submarginal spots that you see in Spialia . Thank you David. According to the Butterflies of Croatia site Grizzled Skipper is absent from the Istria Pe...

Re: A morning search for Spanish Festoon 1st April 2024

We had dozens of them on Gibraltar a couple of weeks ago, but we now know how lucky we were with the weather! That's what I was hoping for too plus maybe a Provence Orange-tip but alas no :( Well done on your search. It's definitely the most beautiful of the Festoon species in Europe, in my opinion...

Re: A morning search for Spanish Festoon 1st April 2024

Mission accomplished I headed back on the 40-minute walk to the cruise terminal. Strangely enough the only other butterfly I saw during my search was a Mallow Skipper, nothing else was on the wing at all. DSC01040.JPG My next spring trip needs to be Cyprus so I can add Eastern Festoon to my list.

Re: A morning search for Spanish Festoon 1st April 2024

As the temperature began to rise I suddenly caught a glimpse of a small butterfly skimming the ground ahead of me. Although not settling I could make out that it was a Spanish Festoon. I had my quarry in my sights but the loose scree on the slopes made it very difficult to keep a grip whilst trying ...

Re: A morning search for Spanish Festoon 1st April 2024

Outside of the cruise ship terminal were the usual taxis so I decided to chance my luck and see if I could explain where I wanted to go using google maps. After a bit of discussion between drivers one was pretty sure he knew where I wanted to be dropped off so away we went. 10 minutes later he was d...

A morning search for Spanish Festoon 1st April 2024

Amid a gloomy mid-winter Claire, my wife found a decently priced cruise sailing out of Southampton visiting a half dozen ports around the Iberian Peninsular departing 25th March this year. (We are currently still on the cruise, but a sea day allows me some time to write this up.) My usual prerequisi...

Re: March 2024

First LT I've heard of in 2024 (unspecified location in Kent) https://twitter.com/WellManneredXS/status/1766231165608825276?t=X0BHJYlfm4dUqc3MfjhYgA&s=19 Thanks for that, Garry. A few seem to be turning up every spring now (and in summer too!) I've no doubt they're slowly re-establishing themse...

Re: Overall Favourite Butterfly Photo of 2023

I took quite a few photos in both the UK and Europe in 2023 including such goodies as Two-tailed Pasha, Nettle-tree Butterfly, Monarch, Canary Blue and Canary Brimstone but my absolute favourite is the Geranium Bronze below. Taken in La Orotava in Tenerife.

Re: White-letter Hairstreak - Favourite Photo of 2023

I'm lucky to have a small number of White-letter Hairstreaks ( and Purple) just 5 minutes from my house so had ample chances to photo these little gems this summer.

Re: Cuba Preview

Brilliant stuff as always Pete. A fair few I recognise from Florida I was also surprised to see demoleus in Cuba! I wasn't expecting it. And yet as you point out in your later post, it has been reported recently from Portugal, and I was aware of it gaining a foothold in Turkey and Cyprus in recent y...
