Hmmm, that's a tough one! Looks most like the 1st one- the arrangement of markings is a good match, bit it looks darker than the ones I saw (there were lots of them flying in the garden)

Isn't this something to do with the fact they see best at the purple, blue and ultra-violet end of the spectrum? Many insect pollinated flowers, viewed in ultra violet light, have markimgs invisible in natural light, to make them more attractive to butterflies etc.

Fair comment, can't argue with any of that, it's just that that particular pic, and a couple of others, are ASTONISHING!! I'd be intrigued to know the stories behind them. The where, when and how- was it the result of pure chance, or the result of dedicated research and planning.
