I'm sorry I don't have time to comment on all the entries but I just wanted to say congratulations to the winner – it was great to see all the entries and I hope to be able to enter future competition (although verrry nervous after seeing the standard of photographs).

Welney in Norfolk on Saturday – small torty, battered small white, small copper, peacock and (oh joy!) a lovely painted lady.

Old Moor in Yorkshire today – zilch.

Thank you all very much for the kind messages.
I'm going over to Welney in Norfolk tomorrow and hope to come back with pictures of a few late butterflies – there should still be a comma or two flying. Fingers crossed.

Glad to meet you!

I just joined a couple of weeks ago and thought I ought to introduce myself. I retired last year (I had a small printing company) and now spend half my week studying for a degree in photography at Nottingham Trent University and the other half travelling round the Midlands and North of England visit...

I tend to use aperture priority, as our weather can change so quickly, literally from minute to minute and time is of the essence when photographing butterflies, as we all know. It is relatively easy (and quick) to just spin the aperture wider or whatever and let the camera take care of the s/s.

On Attenborough reserve in Nottingham today were a couple of Commas and a Speckled Wood; something very small and orange flashed across my vision, not a skipper – could it have been a small copper this late in the year?
