Two for help with ID please.

I've had the annual trip to the French Pyrenees in September and have a pair of butterflies I'm having trouble with. I thought the brown one might be Gatekeeper (fem) but shouldn't it have spots on the rear wings? The other wouldn't show the top of the wings and I've no idea - so any help with namin...

Re: Help from Trinidad please

Guy, I don't think you are misleading me, it's the best I have. I have provisionally catalogued it with that name. If overwhelming evidence arrives to call it something else I'll post it here, we never stop learning... Next trip is on Thursday to Lesvos, where the problems should be fewer - if the a...

Re: Help from Trinidad please

Thanks, Guy, seems good to me. Do you know if there is a local name rather than taxanomic? Love your second link, I just wish I understood a tenth of it!

Re: Help from Trinidad please

Thanks, Vince, certainly the last one comes up convincingly in Google - is the non-taxonomic name significant - is Gold-rimmed and Polydamas one and the same, new world and old world naming perhaps? I'm happy to catalogue the first with King Page Swallowtail, I wonder if anyone can confirm your thou...

Re: Help from Trinidad please

Thanks, Dave, that's a good start. I can see why it's called a daggerwing from other shots which show rearward "spikes" better.

Re: Help from Trinidad please

Hi Pete, I realised they were a bit small when they were uploaded, larger ones on the way now, I don't want to grab all your bandwidth but if you want them even larger... BTW I left my camera on the tripod while grabbing a coffee and when I came back our guide, a lovely bloke, was cheerfully shootin...

Help from Trinidad please

We had a lovely couple of weeks bird watching in Trinidad and Tobago in December (pix are on http://www.dragnil.co.uk if interested). I took shots of one or two butterflies and I'd be grateful for help identifying these please. I assume the filename will be displayed, if not then let the first be No...

One from Italy

It's the birdwatcher again with another photo...
This was in northern Italy on 18 September and I've been through all the Googly things I can think of. If anyone can put a name to it I'll be very grateful.
Thanks in advance,

David

Five from Costa Rica

Hi all, Have just returned from CR with these shots taken when the birdwatching was quiet which wasn't much! This is not my field of expertise so any help in identifying these would be gratefully received.

Many thanks in advance.

Re: Menorca in May

Thanks, Pete, that'll teach me put my head above the parapet! However, and here I stand to have another picture corrected, I have this shot in the database as a Speckled Wood and as well as a colour difference there are white spots on the forewing which are absent from the Menorcan bird, I mean butt...

Menorca in May

Hello, I was in Menorca in May for birds and saw this butterfly (sorry the left wing is partly obscured) and I'm hoping you can help with identification. Very much a novice here but I've been through the ID guide and think (sticks neck out) it's Lasiommata megera (is it really called a Wall?). Am I ...

I thought it was just the birding world had one Linnean name and any number of local tags (Oldsquaw and Long-tailed Duck for example) but I fell into the trap, so thanks for the PS, Guy.

The fog has cleared - many thanks.

Oh, 'eck, now I'm puzzled. I ran for the Google search after Pete's response and http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/Vines/2382/nymphalidae/danainae/ptiger.htm certainly seems to match my second shot. Then a search on African Monarch comes up with: http://www.wingsoftherainforest.com/thumbnail_image...

Help with Gambian ID please

Hello, This is my first time here and I'd appreciate a little help with ID of butterflies. My first love is bird photography but I can't walk past any beautiful butterfly or dragonfly without wanting to capture the image and then identify it. All shots were taken in the coastal tourist area of the G...
