Aye Pete I think you are right. Looking through photos of Common Blue females, and they also have the spots on the forwings like the Argus. I have noticed that some Brown Argus do have a hint of Blue, but not when they are as worn as this one in question :-) Dave you will know you've found a Brown A...

I agree with Pete, definately a DG Fritillary. Check it against the photos of HB and DG: http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/image.php?path=species/High%20Brown%20Fritillary/imago/images/High%20Brown%20Fritillary%20-%20imago%20-%20Arnside%20Knott%20-%20Jul-05.jpg http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/image.php?...

sorry to contradict but my opinion is the second one is also a Northern Brown Argus, you can see the spots on the forwings. Dave did you take the photo? You can be sure it is a NB Argus by its size, they are much much smaller than common blue! Here is a similar pic: http://www.wayno.myby.co.uk/album...

I was really struggling to find the NB Argus at Bishop Middleham Quarry in Durham, spent quite a few hours there. It wasnt until my second visit that I thought I would search the Rock Roses more closely, and sure enough there was quite a few of them. I had missed them because I didn't realise how sm...

Peacock Pupa
Wondering if anyone can help...
I found a Peacock caterpillar wandering about in a picnic site and adopted it.
He turned into a pupa within a couple of days, now I'm wondering how long before he emerges?
Also, will he emerge in the morning?
Thanks in advance!!

Update... This year I've also been using ISO 200 and shutter priority (keeping it to 200-250). I'm taking better photographs, I think practice and my new lens (and white t-shirt!) contributes :-) I've experemented with flash a bit, but I dont yet have a speedlite, just the onboard flash. It does sti...

Martin, It all depends what sort of photograph you are looking to take. If you want a textbook type of photo then I agree with you, the plant is in the way and you cant see all of the butterflies markings etc. However, from a different point of view it is a really nice photograph showing the butterf...

Finally found the Northern Brown Argus at Bishop Middleham quarry in Durham. All the ones I seen were a bit battered, and my photos of it are not great but it was still a nice feeling spending hours looking and finally finding it! http://www.wayno.myby.co.uk/album/Butterflies/slides/IMG_1733.JPG Wit...
