Re: ernie f

Locally Large Blues are starting to increase. Yesterday I saw one and today at the same place I saw three. Even though I was early both days, it was already so warm and sunny they refused to open their wings, even when I purposefully stood between them and the sun so they were in shade they stubborn...

Re: ernie f

Maybe I'm getting a bit paranoid in my old age but I do wonder sometimes. A little while back I saw a lot of Marshies at one location, then when I went back a couple of days later there were only a few left. Sure it was cooler and cloudier so many were probably roosting but I started to get a little...

Yes, three blue species all circling around at the same time was a great moment.

Re: ernie f

Selsley Common again today. Searched for and found Adonis Blue, three of them counted. Pics below all of the same individual however. P1270691.JPG P1270695.JPG P1270701.JPG There came a moment when a Small Blue, a Common Blue and an Adonis Blue were all in a swirling airborne battle with each other....

Re: ernie f

Selsley Common for an hour today between 9 AM and 10 AM. After that it got overcast so I went home, but not before I found Common Blue, Small Blue, Small Heath, Meadow Brown and Dingy Skip. P1270637.JPG The summer orchids are really coming alive now. Common Spot, Fragrant and Pyramidal abound but I ...

Re: ernie f

Yes, Wurzel. As you can imagine when I nabbed that Marshie on a Common Spotted Orchid I was well pleased with my luck. You are right, David, I am very happy with this location. I may have lost my favourite butterfly in my move here - the silver-spotted skipper, but I gained guaranteed locations for ...

Re: ernie f

I checked one of my butterfly books for the flight period of the Marsh Frits. It suggested they begin in the last week of May. It is June 2nd today so I tried my luck at Strawberry Bank. In all honesty, with the rather dull weather we have had here for most of last week I wasn't expecting much, if a...

Re: David M

Nice to hear you had a good time at Siccaridge and Rodborough and glad to have saved you some travel time too!

I like the shot you took recently of two OTips in flight with the moment they both had their wings open fully at the same time.

Re: ernie f

Selsley Common today Dukes seem to be finished now. Number of other butterflies are a bit on the low side, but included Small Heaths and Dingies, Common Blue and Small Blue and one last Greenstreak holding on. However did see this stunning, fresh and very obliging Yellow Shell. Yellow Shell at Selsl...

Now one Brimstone photographed in sharp focus and close-up with its wings open is special, but two at the same time?!?

Re: Bugboys mission

I read your note on Wurzel's pages about yourself also recently being a member of the GStreak In-Cop Club (GSICC) so I thought I'd check out your pages to see what photos you had taken of this very fine event. Brilliant stuff. If you are anything like me you get exhilarated when you see mating in a ...

Re: Wurzel

You got an in-cop pair of Greenstreaks! That's not a common sight! I've only captured images of that happening once before and don't ever expect to see it again. You say it's your first time too but it's my guess you've been interested in butterflies a lot longer than I have so that alone suggests i...

Re: ernie f

Hi Wurzel I took a closer look at the open wing Greenstreak shot (and another pic of the same individual, again with wings open, that I took at the same time but didn't post). My books say and show the sex brands as small light marks close to the leading edge of the forewings. I have to say from wha...

Re: ernie f

Siccaridge Woods again for the PBF's David told me he went there and counted 15 so I went again today and counted 14 on my way out and 14 on my way back. I think we may now be just beyond peak here because quite a few of them were getting a bit worn and tatty but some were still reasonably fresh so ...

Re: ernie f

Yes, David

Most of the woodland is quite dense but there are spots where it opens out. You have to walk in a bit to find the places where the PBF's fly but once you are there it is difficult to tear yourself away.

Re: ernie f

So it was Siccaridge Woods again today for another PBF fix. This time there were at least seven flitting about and all in fine fettle. I have to make a slight correction to my last post. They do favour the bugle for nectaring, that's for sure, but today I saw one nectaring from a wild strawberry blo...

Re: ernie f

Yes, Wurzel Siccaridge Woods is directly opposite Daneway Banks. Room for two cars in the 'car park', maybe three at a push but there is another car park at the bottom of the hill beside the pub. What could be better? Two nature reserves harbouring rare butterflies and plants with a pub all in the s...
