Re: ernie f

Today I spent a short while at my other Adonis Blue site and saw three males and one female. So again this site has both broods I am pleased to say. Not many individuals but the population appears to be stable. When I observed this species in Hampshire at this time in previous years I would regularl...

Re: ernie f

Well I have good news. I went to my local patch once again in search of Adonis Blues and found three. All three were on the worn side so must have been flying a while already. When I hadn't seen them last time I guess they must have been there but I was just not looking hard enough. I was over the m...

Re: ernie f

And overnight...

A Brimstone Moth got inside our house. Not the living room this time. It was on the floor of the hallway. Took a few pics before managing to shoo it outside.

Re: ernie f

Went to my other 'go-to' location for Adonis blues the other day but no success I am afraid. Never mind though because I did see this pair of Chalkhills getting 'down and dirty' down on the dirt so to speak.

David

Yes, not only a lack of second brood Adonis but I haven't seen any later Brown Argus either.

Also,

If you do decide to come over maybe we could meet up. If so, please drop me a notification when you plan to be here and I'll see if I can make it.

Dave

Ho, ho. I knew it wasn't a 'Living Room Carpet' cos our living room doesn't have a carpet - it's all floorboards.

Re: ernie f

I had to shoo another moth from our sitting room. I think this one is a Garden Carpet. As usual, if anyone knows this is wrong, please tell me.

Re: ernie f

David

Last year I didn't see any late brood Adonis at this site - in fact I saw no Adonis in late summer at all at any site around here last year and the ones I did see early in the year were few. Sad, isn't it?

Re: ernie f

Saw this in our sitting room yesterday. I think it might be a Rosy Tabby. If I'm wrong could someone correct me? Thanks.

Wurzel

Yes. I was beginning to think that all the summer butterflies were going to be a disappointment around here.

Re: ernie f

OK, so it wasn't dismal today. I decided to check up on my local patch for the Chalkhill Blues and am very pleased to report that they are as good as last year and in fact the numbers may possibly be up on last year. In the central section of the middle path it was like there was an orgy going on. I...

Re: ernie f

It is most disappointing. Despite some trips locally I have seen very few butterflies, even the more common species are a bit thin on the ground (or in the air) but did see this mating pair of SW Frits. Not my best shot of them - in the past I was able to get a lot closer than this, but still a nice...

Re: ernie f

Locally Large Blues are starting to increase. Yesterday I saw one and today at the same place I saw three. Even though I was early both days, it was already so warm and sunny they refused to open their wings, even when I purposefully stood between them and the sun so they were in shade they stubborn...

Re: ernie f

Maybe I'm getting a bit paranoid in my old age but I do wonder sometimes. A little while back I saw a lot of Marshies at one location, then when I went back a couple of days later there were only a few left. Sure it was cooler and cloudier so many were probably roosting but I started to get a little...

Re: ernie f

Selsley Common again today. Searched for and found Adonis Blue, three of them counted. Pics below all of the same individual however. P1270691.JPG P1270695.JPG P1270701.JPG There came a moment when a Small Blue, a Common Blue and an Adonis Blue were all in a swirling airborne battle with each other....

Selsley Common for an hour today between 9 AM and 10 AM. After that it got overcast so I went home, but not before I found Common Blue, Small Blue, Small Heath, Meadow Brown and Dingy Skip. P1270637.JPG The summer orchids are really coming alive now. Common Spot, Fragrant and Pyramidal abound but I ...

Re: ernie f

Yes, Wurzel. As you can imagine when I nabbed that Marshie on a Common Spotted Orchid I was well pleased with my luck. You are right, David, I am very happy with this location. I may have lost my favourite butterfly in my move here - the silver-spotted skipper, but I gained guaranteed locations for ...

Re: ernie f

I checked one of my butterfly books for the flight period of the Marsh Frits. It suggested they begin in the last week of May. It is June 2nd today so I tried my luck at Strawberry Bank. In all honesty, with the rather dull weather we have had here for most of last week I wasn't expecting much, if a...
