Re: Cumbria butterflies query

Thanks for your comments everyone. This is my first season since I retired and I would really like to photograph all mainland species this year. I was trying to avoid travelling up to Cumbria twice. Not because of the location, but the petrol costs more than anything.

Cumbria butterflies query

Is it possible to see Scotch Argus, Northern Brown Argus and Mountain Ringlet at the same time in Cumbria? Weather permitting of course. If so when is the best time to go and where. I live in Gloucestershire so it has to be worth the long trip. Many thanks.

Re: Large Tortoiseshell - Status in the UK

The only photograph of an adult Large Tortoiseshell taken last summer was mine in July at Tout Quarry Portland as varified by Neil at the time. Let's hope we can be more successful this year. This photo was a bit of a fluke, I had made an effort to find one one the opposite side of the island that d...

Re: Overall Favourite Butterfly Photo of 2021

Thank you for your kind words. Maybe our paths will cross again during the coming months. That spot at Rodborough Common is one of my favourites, a great site for photographing many different species throughout the season.

Re: First Green Hairstreaks of Rodborough Common

I was there on Thursday in beautiful weather and the only butterfly I saw that day was a single Peacock. Well done for spotting the Green Hairstreak. I looked for one, but seems I was a day too early!

Re: Overall Favourite Butterfly Photo of 2021

Hello Soloman. You must be the young man I referred to in my entry above. Your photo must be the same pair of Large Blues as mine.

Re: Overall Favourite Butterfly Photo of 2021

A difficult decision to make one choice from the plethora of photos taken in 2021. Although this is not my best photo of last year, I'm including it for a couple of reasons. Firstly it's a couple of Large Blues getting up close and personal at the new site of Rodborough Common, Stroud. And secondly ...

Re: Purple Hairstreak - Favourite Photo of 2021

I fluked my only 2021 photo of a Purple Hairstreak with this image. It was a rare hot day in the July mini heatwave in the Forest of Dean when I looked up into an oak and saw this lovely specimen sheltering under a leaf to try and keep cool.Sometimes you can get your best photos when you are not rea...

Hi,
Many thanks for the explanation. Very informative. That's my last ab I needed to be identified. Hopefully I'll get to encounter more next year.

Orange Tip ab

I took this photo of a different looking male Orange Tip in the Foest of Dean Gloucestershire where I live in April 2019. Any ideas what the ab might be called?

Peacock ab?

Hello me again,
Are these Peacock abs? Their wing margins seem blacker than I've seen in other specimens over the years. Photos were taken in August 2012 Crickley Hill Country Park Gloucestershire.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Large Tortoiseshell - Favourite Photo of 2021

Here's my favourite (and only) photo of Large Tortoiseshell 2021. Tout Quarry Portland. An adult from Peter's batch of caterpillars no doubt. What a thrill to see one nectaring on the buddleia before it flew off never to be seen again. July 15th 2021
