Re: Clouded Yellow

Thanks for your reply Padfield.

Unfortunately I didn't get good enough views of her upper wings. She was flying fast!

I am attaching the only photo I got of her laying. Does it help at all???

Clouded Yellow

Hi All
I am assuming that the attached photograph is of a helice Clouded Yellow. I took it yesterday after she had been egg-laying at Ditchling Beacon, East Sussex.

Can anyone tell me how you differentiate between helice, Berger's and Pale please???

That's a shame - might have to spend time with the family then

Thanks for trying to arrange it Susie (we can always try again next year).

Re: Escallonia Macrantha

Hi Harry and welcome to UK butterflies!! I have a large Escallonia Macrantha in my south-facing front garden; it gets so many honeybees on it at the moment that the shrub looks like it's moving. The honeybees attract hornets, one of which I watched devouring a honeybee yesterday! Unfortunately I hav...

Re: A question about nectar

Those replies have really answered my query - thanks very much!!

Now I know that nectar is produced continuously and an insect that returned to a given flower, after a period of time, would find more nectar there (unless the flower has been pollinated). Right?

Regards

Re: A question about nectar

Thanks for your response Nick.

Are you saying that once a flower has been pollinated then there is no more nectar so butterflies and bees won't bother to look there again?

A question about nectar

I have not been able to find the answer to my query but know that someone here is bound to know the answer... and it's probably ever so simple!! As we know butterflies (and bees) fly from flower to flower checking on nectar availability. Does nectar continue to develop and mature in the flower so th...

A second possibility is haloisation (a dark edge against a bright background - usually a skyline, tree branches, etc) which is a sharpening artefact introduced in PP, reduced by lowering the degree of sharpening or using alternative methods of sharpening From the description it sounds as though the...

Re: Photo compression

Thanks for the link Dave. The article is rather too technical for me though there is a good example of what I was trying to describe in the right-hand photo under the heading "Visual Perception".

Photo compression

I think that my query has something to do with the title! I was wondering what causes the slight aberration that I, and others, sometimes get on their photos when they are downloaded to a website. The distortion I mean is the "crinkling" or spotting (don't know how to really describe it) a...

Re: Painted Ladies on their way ?

I have had up to four Painted Ladies in my garden over the last three days - they love the Red Valerian. I have read that they usually lay eggs on thistle plants so I am hopeful that I might find some on the Cirsium :) Can anyone tell me if they lay on the upper or underside of leaves please? Thanks
