Re: April 2021

Quite excited with my first sightings of Skippers here in Brittany. At first I thought it was just one species but was pleased to note differences. So, I think I have Dingy Skippers and Mallow Skippers in the garden and meadow that goes alongside it? The poor, battered Painted Lady had a tough journ...

Re: April 2021

After 10 days or so with a nasty N/NE wind that put paid to much butterfly action despite the sunshine, today was sunny and warmer. Orange Tip males and females, a Red Admiral, Male Brimstone, a couple of Speckled Woods and a Holly Blue made it a good day.

Re: March 2021

Not the best picture as I was overly excited! But I’m hoping for confirmation that I’m correct in saying that this is a Large Tortoiseshell? I posted that I saw one on 17th March last year... so, given the weather that we’ve had here in Brittany, it’s about the right timing!

Re: March 2021

A Peacock 2 days ago. And today a male Brimstone who settled obligingly for about a minute - long enough for the photo! Also, a glimpse of something small, quick and brown... no idea what. This day last year I saw a Large Tortoiseshell; it would be nice if history would repeat itself.

Re: March 2021

Just realised that I posted this in February🤪
First photo of Peacock on Daphne odora. The Brimstones are still not staying still.

2 male Brimstones, a Peacock and, for the first time ever (I think) I found myself chasing a Cabbage White!

Re: February 2021

Warm sunshine, stiffish breeze.... and this Comma feeding on Daphne odora is my first, hastily photographed butterfly of the year! (Yesterday)

Re: February 2021

And we’re off!
2 male Brimstones seen today in warm, sunny weather (finally).
No photos as they weren’t inclined to stop even for a second. Spring is here (I hope!)

Re: November 2020

Glorious sunshine and no wind. Can’t believe it won’t be followed by the first proper frost of this autumn... So this could be it from me. But Two Red Admirals, a Comma and a Male Brimstone will have made a pretty good end of November finale!

Caterpillar ID help please

Going through photos I took this back in late summer and meant to ask for help. Beautifully camouflaged on an apple twig. Any ideas/ID appreciated.

Re: November 2020

There was a Red Admiral but it was too quick for me. However, the Speckled Woods are as obliging as ever and posed nicely. Is this another of the inbetweeners David M?

Re: October 2020

Thanks David. I’ve seen lots of Speckled Woods this year and wondered about the difference between tircis and aegeria as I thought I was seeing both(!) I did a check on the site and found an interesting exchange between you and Padfield back in 2011, and that Brittany is a possible dividing line bet...

Re: October 2020

Despite high winds and heavy showers whenever the sun came out today there were still a few stalwarts: a Red Admiral, 2 Speckled Woods still sparring! A single White and this lovely Peacock. Sadly ‘my’ Swallowtail Chrysalis has been eaten - pecked by a bird I think. Should’ve intervened sooner... :(
