Re: July 2021
Nothing like the numbers Stevieb has seen, but in the hour and a half of sunshine before the rain set in (again) I saw my first White Admiral, Silver Washed Fritillary and Small Skipper(?) as well as a Comma, Red Admirals, Ringlets and Meadow Browns. No Purple Hairstreaks or Emperors yet.
Re: June 2021
First Marbled White that sat beautifully still got a photo! No Meadow Brown females yet, but the male numbers are building daily.
Re: June 2021
The hot sunny weather a couple of days ago coincided with the first Meadow Brown males appropriately in the meadow next door. I counted over 30 before I got too hot! A Large Skipper too and a few Burnet Companion moths. In the garden I have never seen so many Painted Ladies and Small Tortoiseshells ...

Hi! I didn’t get to see mine with the wings open. That’s a beauty you’ve got there!

Re: Essex or Small Skipper?
Thanks both! I’d noticed the little hook at the end of the antennae, but didn’t know it was a ‘thing’.

Re: Essex or Small Skipper?
When you say ‘faint mottling on the underside’ do you mean the antennae?

Essex or Small Skipper?
I think this might be an Essex Skipper? Any help much appreciated!
Re: June 2021
Monday was very warm and it brought out the Painted Ladies, a female Swallowtail egg-laying on my fennel, a Map, a Red Admiral, a particularly beautiful Small Tortoiseshell and several Small Heaths - as well as the Orange Tips, Brimstones, Whites, Holly Blues, an Speckled Woods. That’s not a bad list!

Caterpillar ID help
I hope someone can throw some light on what these are - and if I need to ‘relocate’ them?
Unfortunately I’m not sure what the tree is that they are currently defoliating. Any help gratefully received!

Re: May 2021
Thanks David I’m glad I was hesitant. And even happier to have seen her! Hopefully the weather is set fair so with luck there’ll be more.
Re: May 2021
Finally a warm day, some sun and no wind. 2 Swallowtails in my garden. One beautifully fresh, the other looking like it had had a close encounter with a bird. A Small Copper(?) - confirmation or ID appreciated. A Red Admiral, a couple of Brimstones, Holly Blue, Orange Tips and Small Whites and the F...
Re: May 2021
First Green Hairstreak today; a full month later than last year. So gusty that I don’t know how it managed to cling on to the Bluebell!
Re: May 2021
A week without seeing a single butterfly. Yesterday was better: a couple of OrangeTips, 3 Holly Blues, a Small Heath, a Green veined White and a Speckled Wood.

Re: Distinctive looking caterpillar - help please
Thanks Bugboy! I confess I was hoping for some kind of Lycaenid... but I’ll be going back anyway and will be happy to see whatever’s there!

Distinctive looking caterpillar - help please
Photographed this caterpillar on lichen covered rock on cliff edge at the sea - North Brittany - this morning. A blustery day but it was out in the open. Any help with ID much appreciated - especially if it’s going to send me back there in a couple of months to hopefully spot something special!
Re: May 2021
Finally got a couple of pictures of a female Orange Tip after seeing nothing but males! So windy this afternoon that even though it was quite warm there was nothing else showing itself.

Re: April 2021
Hi Pete.
I’m about 35 minutes inland from Morlaix - so about 90 minutes further north than Vannes.a much milder climate on the South Brittany Coast (and many more sunshine hours apparently.) Thanks for the confirmation. I saw Large Chequered Skippers last summer nearby too.
