Re: Threat to Ladybirds

Thanks Alexander for putting the information up, I don't know much about them and I'm sure quite a few people who come on to this site will be be the same.

Threat to Ladybirds

On the news to-day they are refering to the Harlequin ladybirds, these insects are coming to these shores in their thousands and killing insects and our own Ladybirds, they even come into houses in the winter to see out the cold weather. The message is, if you spot one at all, kill it. I don't have ...

Advice for light and dark

How should a photo be taken when the butterfly is dark and the flowers are light, with this photo the flowers are too bright and the Ringlet is too dark, if I try to use less brightness on photoshop then the darkness goes very grey. If I try to get more butterfly than flower the image of the butterf...

Re: Moth or Butterfly?

Liz, as you have said you live in Llandudno, on the Orme there are special butterflies which are only found there, its called the Silver-studded Blue, Great Orme race, the top of the wings look very similar to the Common Blue with a slightly wide black border, the underwings have a continuous orange...

Re: Butterflies resting at night - Meadow Brown

In the evening when I am walking the dog through my hay field I often disturb Meadow Browns deep in the grass so I think that's where they will be roosting, maybe the one you saw was just a bit higher on the Daisy. Deep in the grass its nice and cool, what better place. Its nice when they fly and yo...

Re: June 2009 Sightings

Went around the golf course in Nefyn, masses of Large Skippers, Meadow Browns and very tatty Painted Ladies, lots of caterpillars of the Painted Lady butterflies on the Thistle plants and I just saw this Chrysalis on a stem of grass, I've search the front pages to identify it but I have no idea whic...

Re: Lepidoptera [ not Butterflies ]

You live in a beautiful place Dave, its always nice to see a Ladybird, got this one this morning I'm surprised I managed a good photo for once, I know its all about keeping the camera steady, so I rested by elbows in the grass but you cannot do that with butterflies.

Common Spotted-orchids on the cliffs at Morfa Nefyn, took the photo with 500mm reflex as I didn't fancy climbing the cliff, quite a few of this type on the cliffs yesterday.

Re: June 2009 Sightings

The female went into the Polytunnel and it was so hot it went into a sort of stupor so I picked it off the plastic and placed it on the peas where it was a good model until it got fed up and flew out the door

Re: Lepidoptera [ not Butterflies ]

No I didn't use the flash Eccles, I have enough trouble with the exposure and the monopod getting stuck in the grass, but I got a nice sunset and put it in the weather thread, I didn't use the flash with the sunset either. I'll use it one day. I have downloaded the survey form for the Ladybirds, tha...
