Many thanks for your thoughts, I think its a Green too but only ever seen them on Gorse before and not Dog fighting Purples, so I was rather baffled.

WHICH HAIRSTREAK GREEN OR PURPLE
Hi all, I have a favourite Oak tree on Dartmoor for purple Hairstreaks that I visit every year to observe and photograph them. Last week the first ones had emerged and had started their usual dog fighting each other and lying flat on an oak leaf waiting to attack again. However one I noticed was act...

Re: VERY DARK COMMON BLUE
Hi Dave, and thank you so much for your most informative reply. I have seen literally scores of female Common Blues but this one was the darkest I have ever seen so far. So I thought I would post my images to get some clarity on its appearance for my own records. She was certainly most stunning and ...

VERY DARK COMMON BLUE
Hi all,
noticed this very dark blue Common Blue amongst many normal ones the other day in my local meadow. Wondered if it was the so called "Blue Form" or just a darker than average female. Any comments welcome.

Brown Moth in Grass ID
Wednesday this week gave the first dry and sunny day down here in Devon we have had in the last two weeks or more. I took the pleasant break in the terrible May weather to have a walk through Haldon Forest near Exeter in search of Pearl Bordered Fritillaries of which there were quite a few on the wi...

SMALL COPPER VARIANT ab. Caeruleo-punctata
I was surprised yesterday to spot my first ever ab. Caeruleo-punctata variant of the Small Copper. More surprising I think there were two individuals in the same general area of a local meadow, being seen within about 30 minutes of each other, or maybe the second sighting was the same individual I s...

Luscious Lashes. Small Skipper pose
Hi , and a very Happy New Year to everyone from Devon. Going through the hundreds of butterfly related photos I have taken over the years, to pass away the Wintery days I came across this photo I took during last summer of a Small Skipper in a local meadow. She (or he) had the most luscious eyelashe...

Re: CLOUDED YELLOW PALE OR HELICE FORM
Most interesting, thank you for your thoughts. I just wish I had a shot with wings open but that's almost impossible when they settle of course. So we will have to wait until next year to see what wonders may turn up, unless we get a final Heat Wave !

Re: CLOUDED YELLOW PALE OR HELICE FORM
Many thanks indeed for that help Dave. It was definitely not a normal Clouded Yellow, I see loads of them each year along the costal paths. Because it was so Pale I thought it may have been C.Hyale as several have been report as possibly seen this year along the S.East coast. But more likely to be a...

CLOUDED YELLOW PALE OR HELICE FORM
Rainy days now so going over many hundreds of my photos taken this year. Back in August I was out on a local Coastal path after Clouded Yellows which return there every year. On this particular day there were just a few of the normal ones, looking like flying dusters with their distinctive dusty ora...

Large Spider for ID
Not really a Butterfly subject but whilst out searching for Brown Hairstreaks yesterday I spotted this rather large yet most attractive spider in the long grass of my local meadow. I don't have any Spider books so would appreciate an ID just for my records. Many thanks in advance.
