Re: Tree Grayling etc

I've now seen many of these, some pristine but many more missing chunks of wing, like the top photo above, but much worse... the shape of the chunks and the local fellow wall sitters suggests most are of Wall Lizard origin, but it doesn't seem they actually catch many!I have now enough material to m...

Re: more uncertainties

Thank you very much for replying Guy.. I guess that was sort of what I expected... but I wasn't going to go exploring genitalia and don't even carry a net  I could of course now call it whichever I choose :D :D :o  I think I have a nailed on mannii from yesterday, which of course means it...

more uncertainties

Found a butterfly hotspot today, in all senses of the word... with a surprise Grayling which I have as either semele or neopolitana, the latter mainly by locality. I would be grateful for any opinion please.

Tree Grayling etc

In Southern Italy in September, I have encountered for my first time, the Tree Grayling... Yay!!! - It strikes me as being virtually indistinguishable from Freyer's Grayling, other than distribution, as some of the pics here seem to fit either species.... 190909 H. statilinus_ Torca Italy_5308.jpg 1...

Re: July 2019

Today I have my best home sighting ever! We have a Silver-washed Fritillary in our garden in the top end of North Yorkshire!! - 54,23,52.81N 1,41,22.98W. I didn't rear it but I suppose it may be a captive bred release. I rather hope it is a natural vagrant, and maybe even the vanguard of another nor...

Re: July 2019

Regarding IAC's comment... Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone away from the east coast of Scotland , north east England is experiencing a very sharp increase in Painted Lady numbers. Reports incoming are of multiple hundreds almost everywhere. Coastal locations are seeing phenomenal numbers. I have eve...

agestis vs salmacis

This is probably an impossible ask... but.... I live 3 miles from a known salmacis site up the dale. I also know agestis is moving north and I have seen it here before, but rarely. Today, this rather worn argus turned up here at home and stayed all day :D :D I took some photos, which although not as...

Re: Kip

Thank you! I know this habitat is managed, and very successfully it seems. That probably is a factor with what is a "niche" species in the UK. They probably also enjoyed last summer's weather, but I guess not so much this summer!! They are worth seeking out Wurzel, the site I visit is abou...

Re: Kip

Very little opportunity to see butterflies this year but couldn't miss going to see if there were Black Hairstreaks out near Oundle this year. On a mostly cloudy day I was pleasantly surprised to find multiple individuals, more than I have ever seen there before... casually counted 21 just on my way...

Re: Andolucian queries

Thanks Guy, that link is great. It was with the other abencerragus and of the same size. But quite honestly they could have been flying together. The panoptes were in a completely different place, at lower altitude. I am really disappointed at my personal Andolucian tally from the week 19-26/5... I ...

Re: Andolucian queries

With respect to the above, I think these, at another site altogether, might be abencerragus, they were tiny - and very active... no underside shots unfortunately...

Re: Andolucian queries

Thanks Guy, I'm sure dione is correct, given the orange under the antennae tips. No upperside photos I'm afraid. I think I will give myself celina until the day I can see a better example :? I have a few Pseudophilotes images to ascertain, but with the help of your website with your up to date ID hi...
