Re: May 2023
Found these two on a bench in my garden this afternoon. I don’t recall seeing this before. Still together 2 hours after I saw them.

Re: Overall Favourite Butterfly Photo of 2022
As my favourite I have chosen a “lucky” shot that reminds me of a good day, rather than a “good” shot. Having had limited success in taking an in flight photograph I was taking a break and in conversation with the NWT Warden. Two Swallowtails flew down the path towards us and I pointed my camera in ...

Re: White Admiral - Favourite Photo of 2022
Some species seemed to emerge early in 2022. I went to look for Black Hairstreak and was surprised to see several Silver-washed on the wing. Just in case, I decided to check out a part of the wood where White Admiral live and bingo. I suspect it was very fresh.

Re: Wall - Favourite Photo of 2022
I usually see this species at undeveloped coastal sites and 2022 was no exception. However, this year I also saw it for the first time in my town garden (in August and October, I assume 2nd and 3rd brood). I have chosen the photograph taken in October as my favourite.

Re: Swallowtail - Favourite Photo of 2022
Always difficult to chose a favourite photograph of this spectacularly exotic species. I made an early start and the day was relatively calm. There was plenty of Swallowtail action.

Re: Speckled Wood - Favourite Photo of 2022
My favourite was from an early October stay on St Mary’s, IOS. Speckled Wood are a bit different here and have an interesting history. They were easily the most numerous of the five butterfly species on the wing in contrast to the relative abundance of species on the mainland, I guess 20+ miles of A...

Re: Small Skipper - Favourite Photo of 2022
When the weather is suitable I often take an evening walk around my garden to look for roosting butterflies. Usually, the Small Skipper spends the night of grass stems, however this one was settling down on a Knapweed.

Re: Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary - Favourite Photo of 2022
I was visiting a site on the Cornish cliffs where I had previously seen a few of this species but found very little of anything on the wing. I decided to check out an adjacent gully on the off chance and hit the jackpot. For about an hour, I watched maybe 50 individuals in a steep gully only 50 m lo...

Re: Small Blue - Favourite Photo of 2022
Having been absent for many years, Small Blue reappeared in South Cambridgeshire recently and thanks to some considerate site management, it seems to be doing ok. The nearest site is only a few miles from home making it very easy to watch this charming species.

Re: Silver-washed Fritillary - Favourite Photo of 2022
A disproportionate number of “first sightings” in 2022 were made in Cambridgeshire and when I visited a local wood on 7 June I was surprised to find plenty of Silver-washed Fritillary on the wing. My favourite photograph(s) were of a pair happily feeding by the edge of the ride.

Re: Orange-tip - Favourite Photo of 2022
The photogenic Orange Tip is a welcome sight in Spring. I saw my first on 14 April and for a few weeks they were abundant. I saw my last on 7 July, but this was in the mountains where it was still Spring. I have selected my favourite as it shows the beautiful underside along with the hallmark orange...

Re: Pearl-bordered Fritillary - Favourite Photo of 2022
Last year I was driving through Bodmin Moor in unusually sunny weather so I made a quick stop at a Pearl-bordered site. Several were flying but only one sat and allowed me to take photographs. Alas, by the time I reached Wiltshire, the sky was black, my windscreen wipers were working hard and there ...

Re: Marbled White - Favourite Photo of 2022
Unable to select from several, sorry. I encountered a freshly emerged female being courted by two males. She also had to contend with a couple of ants, one had a firm grip on her proboscis! Shortly afterwards, I took a “head on” photograph of another female who appears to have an egg attached.

Re: Large Skipper - Favourite Photo of 2022
There is a strong population of Large Skipper in my “meadow “ (abandoned paddock). They often spill over into the garden and feed on the ornamental plants. The photograph I have selected is a somewhat psychedelic example.

Re: December 2022
A single, slightly worn Red Admiral in the garden today, I saw my first one this year in more or less the same spot on 12 January.
A still sunny day, but only 7 in the shade and a fraction above 0 last night. Queens of Buff-tailed and Red-tailed bumblebee also flying as was a Swallow!
