Small pearl-bordered fritillary ab.

Lots of SPB fritillaries about this year. Found this interesting aberration while exploring some marshy pastures near my new place in Wigtownshire.

Re: help with northern species

Thanks for the help everyone, plans are starting to slowly coalesce. Another question I have, whilst hunting for Wood Whites of the Cryptic variety in Ireland I'd like to take in some Irish Marsh Fritillaries, is anyone familiar enough with Irish sites, either side of the border, that would be good...

Re: Skipper ID Scotland

Both small and Essex skipper have been in the Lockerbie area for a good few years but have been very slow to expand their range in contrast to the rapid colonisation of several species on the east side of the country. It seems that in the last few years in the west, species that were previously spre...

Re: Skipper ID Scotland

That's great guys. I was starting to have doubts even though I've seen plenty of these on my travels. It's great to see their march northwards is still underway.

Skipper ID Scotland

While walking my transects at Mabie Forest, Dumfries and Galloway today I came across a couple of skippers in an area I have not seen any of the locally common large skippers before. One was very worn but the other bright orange with sharp white borders. Its not a great image as it only settled for ...

Re: Catalonian pyrenees ID's

That's great Roger, many thanks. Here's the next one. I must have seen thousands of marbled whites over the week but this one stood out. Could this be f.leucomelas?

Re: Catalonian pyrenees ID's

I got pretty excited when I found this lovely eribia. It was close to a scree slope at about 1750m and I was convinced that it was Lefebvre's. Not so sure now, and I'm leaning towards Piedment ringlet despite being quite unlike the ones I saw in the massif central a few years ago. P1070978.JPG P1070...

Catalonian pyrenees ID's

I've just returned from a trip to the Pyrenees and there's two or three butterflies I'm not sure about. The first of them is this blue. There were at least two quite worn individuals with a similar size to a large blue. The altitude was about 1500m. My initial thoughts were mountain alcon but they s...
