Re: June 2021

...I arrived on site with no-one else seen and soon had my first sighting of a Glanville Fritillary ... From the view you've given us, that Glanville appears to be aberrant, with reduced brown patterning over the orange on the forewing. Very nice! Cheers, Dave Thanks Dave :) Much appreciated :)

Re: June 2021

Following that trend I was up early this morning to drive from Cheshire to Croydon to finally visit Hutchinson's Bank after years of meaning to but with work, my personal life and COVID all getting in the way! I arrived on site with no-one else seen and soon had my first sighting of a Glanville Frit...

Re: February 2021

My first butterfly of 2021 was a Small Tortoiseshell seen in Lostock Green, Northwich, Cheshire on Feb 25th. I've seen a sighting on here posted from south Derbyshire by Otep and the Lincs ones from Phil, but I may just be the furthest north for those who have reported so far?

Re: April 2020

..I'm happy with that. Quite rightly, Doc. I have Orange Tips all over the damp common near me but I've never had any visiting my garden flowers. Our neighbours hate it, they have typical Cheshire manicured gardens with 'Green Thumb' vans visiting to service the grass (!!!!) and we've got...

Re: April 2020

After strictly obeying stay home rules other than going out to our private paddocks to care for the horses I've come down with tonsillitis! Still it allowed me to watch the small sun trap back garden today. Had Large White, Small White and Orange-tip. I'm happy with that :D

Re: April 2020

Not been on for a while (had a crocked back!). But back butterflying again :) I've spent the last 2 sunny days on my exercise walk on my local patch, Newchurch Common and the adjacent Mosslands, near Northwich in Cheshire. Over the two days I have recorded several firsts for me this year. Yesterday ...

Re: June 2017

A mate sent me a picture this morning confirming Purple Hairstreak at his local patch on the southern side of Northwich, Cheshire. This was is first ever record of this species there, although he has plenty of oak trees. I am passing it on as no-one has mentioned this species yet and it is just abou...

Re: April 2017

I went for an afternoon walk on my local patch, Newchurch Common, Cheshire, as the sunshine came out and it looked good for butterflies. Species I had already seen this year were present in the shape of Peacock, Comma and Small Tortoiseshell. My first new species for the year was Orange-tip, with 2 ...

Re: August 2016

Seeing as how sightings get thinner this time of year I thought I'd just add a few, not spectacular, but at least they're sightings! Popped down the 250 miles to Minsmere RSPB yesterday for the day to twitch the Purple Swamphen that is there and took advantage of the sunshine to do some insect watch...

Re: May 2016

Also several wall lizards (podarcis muralis) which I believe are unique to Ventnor . I have seen Wall Lizards ( P.muralis ) all along the Dorset coast from Purbeck to Portland and there are in several other populations in the south of England. A useful site guide/population summary can be found her...

Re: Wood Whites Midlands

Thanks for such a quick response :) Brilliant. We will head down with extra confidence now. Glad we keep bumping into each other :) She's out of hospital by the way but in between treatments, well enough to do some butterflying in the sun, so thanks again :)

Re: Wood Whites Midlands

I know this is short notice, but I intend to pop to Bury Ditches tomorrow and any site info would be fantastic. If there are any 'best' spots to try on site njs5870 then I would be really grateful for any info. I am popping down with someone who has been very ill and her mobility isn't great so sear...

Re: June 2015

I managed a few hours out in the sun on Sunday and connected with my first Northern Brown Argus of 2015, at Latterbarrow NR in Cumbria, it was freshly emerged and had a crumpled wing. Also seen were a Painted Lady and a Silver-Y Moth. Moment of the day was when the Northern Brown Argus landed on a F...

A dull day yesterday here in the north-west but gave it a punt at Mynydd Marian NR near Llanddulas in N.Wales.Definitely worth it with one, or possibly, two Painted Ladys seen. In addition I had a single Wall, this site produced good numbers two years ago, a couple of Speckled Woods, several Small H...

Re: May 2015

We had at least 4 Glanville Fritillary at Hutchinson's Bank today, in dull weather, hopefully we will get some sunshine soon. Grizzled and Dingy Skippers were mostly the other butterflies seen. The Usual Glanville hot spots provided the sightings, The Bench on the bend in the cutting, is a sheltere...

Re: October 2014

Had the most unexpected sighting that I have ever had today with a single Small White flying past Marks & Spencer in the middle of Northwich, Cheshire. I doubled back, doubting what I had seen but watched it at close quarters as it headed up the street & out of town towards the Anderton Natu...

On RBA Pager at 5.38pm :

'Monarch butterfly at Zennor at Mussel Point at 1.50pm then flew West'

So they make landfall on the mainland :)

Re: Monarch Alert

Worth keeping an eye out for sure. My messages on RBA pager indicate that it could well be the same Monarch over the 2 reports. Flew in off the sea at Gugh, then carried on to the very close, semi-linked island of St Agnes for the 2nd sighting :) But one individual is enough, if a mainland one is fo...
