Re: July 2023

..23 species is probably my best ever British total... That's right up there, Sifenn. Anything topping 25 is worthy of a newspaper article! Hold the front page.....after a '4 site saga' today at Rodborough and around Wotton under Edge I counted 27 species :D Whites; Large, Small, Green-veined, Brim...

Re: July 2023

As with others above, I was enjoying a good variety of butterflies while walking in woodland and chalk downs in Glos today; 23 species is probably my best ever British total. In local woods, Red Admirals are everywhere, and male Silver-washed Fritillaries are frantically searching for mates. Craning...

Re: July 2023

I was just down the road from Bertl today in Balkello Community Woodland, just north of Dundee, where I was chuffed to see the whitest spotted Northern Brown Argus. I've seen them near Newcastle and Morecambe Bay, but this was far more distinctive. P1110756.JPG Coming from Gloucestershire it was odd...

Re: "Unauthorised" releases

Thanks very much for the responses about Whitesheet Hill, both tips on where to look and some interesting historical context - had a superb day there today :D A cool and breezy start, so the quarry proved a good place as there was just enough shelter for a handful of Glanville and Marsh Fritillaries...

Re: "Unauthorised" releases

On the subject of unauthorised releases, I'm planning to take a recent butterfly convert to Whitesheet Hill this weekend to show him some Glanville Fritillaries. Has anyone seen them flying there yet this season ? I haven't seen them myself in UK since the demise of the Sand Point colony in Somerset...

Thailand trip advice

Happy New Year to the UK Butterfly community I'd welcome advice/recommendations from anyone with experience of butterflying in Thailand;I have booked flights for a 3 week butterfly trip from mid-March. I've been researching general areas to visit and have decided to spend a week in the north around ...

thanks Kip

Did you do the whole boat or plane trip experience into Tortuguero, or come at it from landside as far as conditions/access would allow ?

Re: Costa Rica

Super pictures from Costa Rica - looks amazing ! Was due to visit CR in late 2020, but stymied by the pandemic. Now an opportunity has come up to go travelling, and I'll be in CR in early Dec. All of my stuff is in storage, including my CR guides, so would welcome any hints on good locations to visi...

Re: Silver Spotted Skipper locations along the A35

I visited Fontmell Down on Monday afternoon (1st) and saw about half a dozen Silver-spotted Skippers. As you head north on B3081, there is a car park on the left before Melbury Abbas. Looks like you'll need to be quick, so more specifically; There is a footpath back along the road southwards that ta...

Re: August 2021

Enjoying reading about other peoples trips and observations, so adding one to the thread. I was dodging rain showers at Grafton Wood near Worcester earlier this week looking for Brown Hairstreak. Seems that Purple Hairstreak are very partial to Ash, and I was drawing a blank until I happened on this...

Moth, Hornet Moth or Beetle ?

I was at Fermyn last week enjoying the Purple Emperors when a couple of guys introduced me to Hornet Moths, in particular a Lunar Hornet Clearwing. Back in the 'burbs of sunny Stockport, this evening we were briefly visited by this insect, enjoying our sweetpeas, which I managed to photograph on my ...

Re: July 2021

Whist going through my Hungarian photo's ( Farm Latour) I came across this creature. Can anyone help me with its identification? P.J.Underwood Don't think I saw any opinions on this. I'd suggest it is a Glanville Fritillary, M. cinxia, based on the spots of the lower hindwing. I had a fantastic tri...

Re: June 2021

Enjoying following others sightings and images above. I had a great Monday 28th 'Day of the Satyrids' seeing Large Heath at Meathop Moss and Mountain Ringlet on Irton Fell before dropping into Arnside Knott where I found Grayling posing obligingly on bramble, as well as fresh Ringlets still slightly...

Re: Heath Fritillary - Blean Woods

thanks David M, will have to save Glanvilles for next year as I ran out of time. I found a few Heath Fritillaries at Halse Combe and then spent the afternoon watching High Brown Fritillaries whizzing around the Heddon Valley. Some high level cloud and a bramble patch finally enabled me to grab a few...

Re: Heath Fritillary - Blean Woods

Opportune to see this conversation as I have a chance to be in N Somerset/ N Devon next weekend 26/27th and was wondering if Heath Fritillary is still likely to be around ? I last visited Halse Coombe in 2011 in mid-May when they were already on the wing, but I think that was an 'early' year. A morn...

Dorset - Large Tortoiseshell still around ?

I'm looking forward to a few days in Dorset this weekend and planning to visit Alners, Fontmell and Durlston. I wondered if anyone has seen the 'Portland' Large Tortoiseshells recently and whether it's worth adding in to my itinerary ? I was falling over them in N Greece in June 2019, but the prospe...

Re: Scotch Argus in N England yet ?

Thanks for the updates
I made it to Arnside today, rather overcast, 2-3 males occasionally on the wing and then hunkering down in the grass on the NE facing slope - this was the best I could do for an open wing shot this year ! Gatekeepers doing well....
