Re: Brown Hairstreak Sites in Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire

I saw a female down on thistles in the 'thicket' at the east end of Bernwood Meadows a couple of years back. Not on your list, but relatively close by, I also saw a female in the hedge at the entrance to Finemere wood. Happy searching.

Scotch Argus in N England yet ?

Has anyone seen Scotch Argus out yet at Arnside or Smardale ? weather looks favourable this weekend, but haven't seen any reports of sightings. I have generally visited in last few days of July, but I wouldn't blame them for not being out yet given recent weather. thx

Re: virtually N Greece - final Day 7

thanks, much appreciated for comments and time to ID iitems Padfield, Pete Smith and Mikhail. I felt the Powdered Brimstone was a long shot and pleased to 'gain' the Sandy Grizzled. I will check photos for the yellow legume; host plants a definite area to work on....

virtually N Greece - final Day 7

On Day 7, Thursday, the final day of my N Greece trip, I set out for Mount Orvilos – I’d read about it and seen it in the distance. I followed now well driven route to Kapnofyto, grabbing a shot of the Rhodopi mountains, https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50020462132_264f72837b_z.jpg and instead of...

virtually N Greece Day 6

On my June 2019 trip to N Greece, having enjoyed Day 4 trip to Kapnofyto, I decided to head there again, make some different stops in the valley en route, and explore more around the farmland surrounding the village. I alluded to it in day 1, but every day I was seeing hundreds, if not thousands of ...

N Greece 'virtually' day 5

I started out Tuesday, Day 5 of my N Greece 2019 trip, in the area at the N East of the lake where a girder bridge crosses the Struma river . I knew it was a long-shot, but I planned to check around the white willow (salix alba) on either bank where Freyer’s Purple Emperor had previously been seen. ...

N Greece virtually day 4

Monday (of my June 2019 trip to N Greece/Lake Kerkiniti/S Rhodopi mountains) I decided to head NE of the lake. A slightly cooler morning, I drove out of Sidirokastro into a winding valley, with wooded areas lower down giving way to scrubbier dry areas whenever the road ascended, and with roadside me...

thanks guys for your feedback, and welcome corrections to my tentative IDs; plenty more tentatives coming. Paul, I'd planned the trip and booked flights when I realised about the Greenwings tour - I imagine many eyes and experts made for a great trip

virtually N Greece 2

After a comprehensive Greek breakfast of eggs, honey, yoghurt, I set out with temperature already climbing, to explore the western side of Lake Kerkinitis. However, several stops revealed relatively little on the wing, so I decided to head into the hopefully cooler mountains and headed for the villa...

virtually N Greece

Looking at my Easyjet cancellation for flight to Bilbao next week to visit Picos de Europa, I was reflecting that a year ago today I had flown to Thessaloniki in N Greece and driven up to Lake Kerkinitis near the border with Bulgaria, inspired by a trip that Pete Eeles and others had taken some year...

Posting on an ab Small Tortoiseshell I saw a couple of days ago in Worcestershire reminded me of a couple of probable aberrant fritillaries seen on European trips in the last few years that I never got around to posting. I was supposed to be off to the Picos in N Spain next week, so consoling myself...

female common blue ?

female common blue or NB Argus.jpg I saw this at Arnside a couple of weeks ago - it had brownish uppersides, but didn't seem to have strong enough orange lunules to be a Northern Brown Argus. Forewing underside lacks expected common blue cell spot. There were male common blues nearby, and a couple ...

ab Small Tortoiseshell ?

ab Small Tortoiseshell.jpg
I was visiting Monk Wood near Worcester on Friday and spotted this unusually marked Small Tortoiseshell, lacking a couple of black forewing spots, much more black/grey on the hindwings. Is this an aberrant and does it have a name ?
thanks
