Re: ID help with this Fritillary please

Hi Nik, Thank you so much for explaining everything to me,butterflies are certainly a difficult subject compared to birdwatching which is my other pastime. I did go out looking for the fritillaries to try for underside shots ,but the weather has been very hot and windy so not much success. I did man...

All the photogrpahs were taken here in SW Turkey near Cesme at the end of the Izmir peninsula. I have managed to get a copy of Ahmet Beytas' book on Butterflies of Tur...

Re: ID help with this Fritillary please

Thanks Guy,
Just been looking through Fritillaries in Ahmet Baytas's book Butterflies of Turkey.
So many features are very alike with this species.
Help definitely needed with this one.

It does look very like Algerian fritillary, though the outer margin is too sharply bent towards the apex, I think - but knapweed fritillary is such an incredibly variable species I don't think it suffices to look like Algerian frit. It also has to ...

Re: Which Grayling !!!!!

bobcesme, I too think it's a Freyer's Grayling. The black discal and postdiscal lines look good for 'fatua' , as does the scalloped effect of the outer margins. Regards Kev Thanks Kev, Yes,it was the wavy median lines that pointed me in the Freyer's direction. At last I have identified one correctl...

Re: Blue and Hairstreak ID help please

Hi Bob. The hairstreak is ilex, Satyrium ilicis , and the 'blue' is a brown argus, Aricia agestis . In fact, Aricia is a complex and difficult group, so it may be someone more familiar with the area and the latest taxonomy will correct me, but the the pattern of spots and the chequered fringe mark ...

Blue and Hairstreak ID help please

Hello everyone,
This is my first post.
The question is, could someone identify the two butterflies for my please.
I am a novice but think the blue maybe a Zephyr blue or Silver studded,
I think the Hairstreak maybe a Blue spot.
They were both seen in South West Turkey.
Thanks
Bob
