Re: In my Newcastle back yard

Thank you. Yes, it's obvious now. I was wrongly assuming they all had brighter underwings. First time I have managed to snap one in my garden (they rarely stay still for long), although we did get one running amok in the house too!

In my Newcastle back yard

Hi there. I don't get many butterflies at my North East terraced house, though have had many Painted Ladies and a few Large Whites of late. However I found a butterfly (don't think it's a moth) hiding in my fushcia hanging basket this morning with wings closed. I'm probably being stupid but I've loo...

Re: August 2017

[quote from David M " Excellent start to the month. Just having the sun out here in south Wales would be welcome at the moment!" ] I would welcome that too ! Mike from Oxford replied a couple of days ago to a posting which referred to autumnal weather by stating that it was still only 31 ...

Re: Butterfly sites in Norfolk

Wow I've never seen a white admiral there, I live close by too and am up there a lot, thats a great spot..... where did you see it? I saw a couple of brown argus there which I haven't seen there before, and there are lots of pretty common blues just along from the carpark (opposite the ice cream va...

Re: Butterfly sites in Norfolk

Also Holt Country Park car park for Silver washed Fritillaries on the buddleia. Also White Admirals here. I'm still looking for a reliable site for White letter Hairstreaks.... seemed to have failed at Holkham and Mousehold... worried they are over now. I did see a White Letter Hairsteak on Mouseho...

Re: Butterfly sites in Norfolk

Hi Ian

Agree with all the above. I have recently seen Dark Green Fritillaries and White Admirals at Holkham, plus Silver Studded Blues at Kelling Heath. Foxley Wood, between Norwich and Fakenham, is a good place to see Silver Washed Fritillaries if you're after those.

Re: July 2014

On my lunch breaks at the UEA (University of East Anglia) I have picked up around a dozen species this week. There are far more Gatekeepers than the same time last year, but so far much fewer Commas and Common Blues. The single Painted Lady that hung around for a good ten minutes is the first that I...

Re: June 2014

Swallowtail just flew over my west sussex garden near Horsham! Great stuff. Nice to see they have appeared outside Norfolk. Meanwhile in Norfolk, the Swallowtails are still around at RSPB Strumpshaw Fen. Spotted four of them today on the north of the reserve (two together at one point but not settl...

Re: May 2014

Nice images, Jason, and good luck with your Swallowtail hunting!! Thank you and I hope I get the chance to do it - I haven't always been successful in timing it right at Strumpshaw, even though it's close to where I grew up. I am quite fortunate though that I work next to the lake at the University...

Re: May 2014

Belated hi from the weekend (first time poster but long time lurker). Due to a rare window in my schedule, I realised this was the time to try and see my first Duke before they disappeared for the year. A day trip from my home town of Norwich to the Chilterns on Sunday (May 18th) in good weather rai...

Hi there. Been lurking for a while but thought it was about time that I joined. I have got back into butterflies (and moths, dragonflies, etc) over the last year and picked up where I left off as a kid when I was into sightings in a big way. Hoping I can bring some useful info on this site and pick ...
