Re: British & Irish Butterfly Rarities
Thanks for the info, although the Author of it has been discredited by Surrey Butterfly Conservation and others in recent years, due to his deleting of valid records {they have to be re-added in after he has removed them causing a lot of extra work for the County Records], following his departure fr...

Re: British & Irish Butterfly Rarities
Got my copy of the book today, very useful, as i and a few others will have to search over 45 acres for early stages of Black-veined White in a couple of months, and the lovely photographs are a great help. The map of BVW also shows BVWs used to occur on our site?[in the area, barings taken from the...

Re: Winners and losers 2023
Glanville Fritillaries in Surrey had a good year, Holly Blue did to, our site is never good for Red Admirals, and this was the same as usual, 17 in the entire year on transect, and the only count above a single was week 26 with 7. When Black-veined Whites had 15, and Marsh Fritillary 20, it shows th...

Re: Grizzled Skipper - Favourite Photo of 2023
Yes not many visitors were looking at Grizzingy Skippers, Glanvilles, Small Blues etc at the end of may and Early June, so a lot were overlooked. We will be over-run with Glanvilles in 2024 hopefully.
But we always get a few taras grizzled every year.

Re: Glanville Fritillary - Favourite Photo of 2023
Remember Eleanor Glanville lived at Sand Point, Somerset, which has had Glanvilles up until 2016, on and off. So a lot of the Glanville Fritillary history from the begining in the UK is in that area. Petivers history at the end is in ours in South London.

Where can a start this year the Hutchinsons Glanvilles were overlooked for 2 weeks, but got on with breeding, so we have at least 54 Larval Webs for 2024.
here are a few pictures.

Re: Brown Hairstreak – Favourite Photo 2023
Yes an Adult, that day they hang on into October here these days.
although i expect them not to make it into November.
It seems to have had a great year in and around london, its spread into Kent seems to be continuing and there were records near the Dartford Crossing too.

Re: Landscapes Designed for Plantain Fritillary
You have to remember where Lady Glanville lived before her very short time in Linconshire, it was very near to Sand Point, where Glanvilles survived on and off until 2016. So it could be she sent from Lincolnshire specimens caught at Sand Point before her move, and at that time were assumed to be fr...

Re: Bugboys mission
I have little doubt in my mind as to how they came to be there. An odd advantage of the situation though was that despite the many people, I had the Fritillaries pretty much to myself and I made full use of this. The London Wildlife Trust were also about to put out it was likely to be a release, bu...

Re: 2023 - Large Tortoiseshell
On the Kent butterflies fb group. 6 freshly emerged at Elmley car park... Looking at a map, Elmley appears to be a nature reserve on the south side of the Isle of Sheppey. The area looks very flat and wet, and doesn't seem to have much in the way of woodland - which means searching for the larval w...

There's a photo on Twitter posted by Phillip Lowe on the 26th May of one that was near Portsmouth around that time. Thanks that seems about it 2 migrants from this year, and our last year one. doesnt look like a dumper at work again. Numbers reported on the French and Dutch coast too, ready for the...
