Re: 2024 - Large Tortoiseshell

We get the flack, the others get away with it. This is taking a serious thread a little OT...as I think most people are here to find out about genuine and potential LT migrants/hibernators - so apologies! But I do feel i'll have to defend myself a little...nobody is giving any individual flack...I ...

Re: 2024 - Large Tortoiseshell

In my mind, bird enthusiasts have it a bit easier. I imagine that weather is not an issue if a rare bird lands in Cleethorpes and the bird is likely to hang around a while too. Generally in Spring, birds are motivated to move on "quickly" as they're on the hunt for mates/breeding sites......

Re: October 2023

I believe only a live specimen would be sufficient for 100% acceptance. Is that true? Seems very outdated in the 21st Century world of Digital Photos...especially if multi-observed (Single observer records can always be considered a bit duff) If its good enough for birds surely good enough for Inse...

Re: British & Irish Butterfly Rarities

Hi Pete...thanks for responding and please don't take it as a critisism... The books overall quality is amazing and the detail is fantastic...it must have take a huge amount of research! I'm trying to pace myself by only reading a couple of species descriptions/day!!! I guess...adding "x and y&...

Re: British & Irish Butterfly Rarities

Very pleasantly surprised when my pre-ordered copy dropped on my doormat earlier! Looks great and up the quality of the excellent earlier Life Cycles volume... Not had chance to do more than flip through yet...though a little dissapointed Large Chequered Skipper was omitted because of geography and ...

Re: Long-tailed Blue ALERT

Without wanting to comment on any records (and i've always assumed all these South Coast LTBs were genuine) you can't blame anyone for being skeptical of any records these days. The volume, variety and regularity of releases in the UK is utterly ridiculous and whilst in many ways it makes Butterfly ...

Re: "Unauthorised" releases

Surely all releases barring the occasional Official Re-Introduction project (and i'll reserve my own opinion on many of those) are Unauthorised . And this sites policy is pretty unambiguous... Its Butterfly Code states - NO releases of captive stock. There are the risks of parasites and diseases Egg...

Re: 2023 - Large Tortoiseshell

Lets not forget East Leake is bang in the middle of "dodgy release" territory.
I'd hesitate to lend it the same credence as the EG: Cornish records.

Re: 2021 - Large Tortoiseshell

Absolutely no slur on whoever reported the sighting (I don't for a minute think the report itself was anything other than legitimate, honest and well intentioned) Please accept my apology if that's how it came across... Whilst there was a small influx of migrant moths around that time (local trapper...

Long-tailed Blues

I started my Butterfly watching after the year they bred at Samphire Hoe, so still haven't managed to catch up with an LTB (A couple of failed trips to Newhaven Tide Mills) I'm down South with work one day this week so thought I might have an opportunity as there have been reasonable numbers reporte...

Re: October 2018

Surely we could finish the year with a Long-tailed Blue after such a hot summer and so many episodes of southerly winds?
(Mind you I haven't exactly been over-run with migrant Moths in the trap this year so perhaps i'm missing something obvious.)

Sad news..never met him, but always enjoyed his posts and pictures

Only just realised he was the writer of the excellent Dragonfly-Days South Wales Dragonfly site...even more reason he'll be missed!
