Re: Arnside Knott

That's exactly what I encountered on Wednesday...i was too late on a hot day so no Scotch Argus...(all sheltering) and HBFs and DGFs occasionally shooting past at 100mph!
I'll try to be onsite nice & early tomorrow :)
Cheers

Arnside Knott

I visited Arnside Knott last Wednesday – unfortunately due to work commitments not till later in the day… Butterfly activity was very low apart from lots of Grayling – but I put this down to the heat and the fact that I’d probably missed most of the activity. Hoping for a return visit this week for ...

Re: Yellow-legged Tortoiseshell Invasion in the Netherlands!

RSPB Minsmere tweeted "No sign of Yellow-legged Tortoiseshell after 11am" at about 11:30 (There was supervised access prior to this) I wondered if there had been a more recent update... Kicking myself for waiting on news and not travelling on spec...but new to Butterflies and don't have a ...

Re: White-letter Woes!

Visit # 6 to Bedford Purlieus today...had a couple of hours between 10 & 12... Plenty of Hairstreak activity in the crowns of the elms... And finally thought i'd cracked it when this lady fluttered out of the trees in my eyeline to nectar and bask... But, no! Its a very late Black Hairstreak...w...

White-letter Woes!

Looking back over my diary for the last couple of weeks...I realise i have now made six (yes SIX!!!) trips to look for White-letter Hairstreak. 5 to Bedford Purlieus and 1 to Holkham Pines (the brambles and elms around the hides at Lady Anns Drive) Whilst I have seen a few up in the canopy I have ye...

Hehehe...why not go for all the Dragonflies after you've finished with the Butterflies LOL ;)
I keep meaning to devote some time to learning about and seeing them...but something else always distracts me!

Re: CJB

Saw some "moth'ers" looking for Small Eggar while I was at Daneway on Monday... I wondered why they had nets and were "swishing" them through the grass...I approached them as I was concerned about this behaviour (my mothing has always been done with a bright light and a cup of te...

Re: June 2014

Short afternoon visit to Bedford Purlieus - lots of Silver-washed Fritillary on show...mobile, active and conspicuous both around the trees and down on the Brambles. Start of an emergence of Comma and Small Tortoiseshell - as many bright fresh individuals seen...also numbers of fresh looking Red Adm...

Re: Common or Adonis Blue

Had a few Blues that looked very similar last week at Durlston Country Park and Bindon Hill...I thought the same...Adonis on the shade of Blue but too faded to clinch with 100% certainty.

Re: Collard Hill or Daneway Banks?

Really glad to have visited Daneway Banks.. Even without the Large Blues it would have been an excellent site! A beautiful mix of meadow, cropped turf and scrubby woodland on a series of SE facing slopes... The whole area was alive with butterflies...there must have been getting on for 100 Marbled W...

Re: June 2014

Daneway Banks What a superb site...literally alive with butterflies...we recorded 10 species in a couple of hours. More Marbled White than I have ever seen...must have been a hundred on the wing! Found an active but confiding ♀ Large Blue ovipositing on Thyme which allowed plenty of photo ops...but...

Couldn't agree more! What a marvelous site...literally alive with Butterflies...we had 10 species of Butterfly, some interesting Moths and some lovely Orchids in a couple of hours today...including the star of the show...my first Large Blue...

Collard Hill or Daneway Banks?

I've visited Collard Hill twice this year without a Large Blue sighting so far...and the volunteers blog doesn't seem to give out positive vibes for good numbers over the next few days... As tomorrow might be my last chance to travel down I wondered if there was a consensus on where I should focus m...
