Re: Chequered Skipper - returning to England?

I'm sure its not going to be a popular response...but as i've indicated previously I have grave concerns over the Chequered Skipper re-introduction project... (Not because I've anything against these lovely Butterflies...not long before my annual pilgrimage up to see them again!) But because I have ...

Re: Chequered Skipper - Favourite Photo of 2016

One of the few species I spent any time with this year...here's a Chequered Skipper from Glasdrum Wood in May It chucked it down with rain ALL morning on that long drive up...yet when I arrived it stopped for an hour or two! http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/phpBB/gallery/image.php?album_id=2388&im...

Re: ID of silvery moth please

Seems quite late in the year...but I'd go for a pair of Pale Tussock Moths too

Re: First Chequered Skippers for 2016 Reported

I'm in the area on Saturday - so will check it out...though the weather forecast isn't great! Monday looks alot better...so may be lucky on my way back down south!
I usually do Chequered Skippers a week or two later...but catching up with them tomorrow would save me a long drive!

Re: 2015 Butterfly winners and losers

Fantastic Summer for Holly Blues...and a better (though still poor) year for Painted Ladies than 2014...
Overall I think it suffered in comparison with 2014's fantastic summer :)
Though the late flurry of Long-tailed Blues kept interest up till very late in the season :)

Re: Chequered Skipper - returning to England?

Surely there advise would be Yes! Release it (whatever it is) into wherever (regardless of habitat suitability, competition or appropriateness)

Re: Chequered Skipper - returning to England?

I'm sure its not as simple as either/or but I'd rather limited funds and resources were put into conserving existing species and habitat than a re-introduction scheme...

Re: LTBs in Southern England

Thanks for the great info! Very helpful indeed!
Looks like I'll have another bite at the cherry over the next week or so...even though yesterday was unsuccessful!

LTBs in Southern England

As I started Butterflying too late to catch the 2013 LTB influx...I'm still hoping to catch up with one! Looks like there are a few about on the South Coast... I've a work appointment in Chichester tomorrow....finishing about Lunchtime...so if any public spirited UKB'er wanted to PM me with any info...

Re: The impact of collecting

I find the whole story about "the guy with the net must have wiped them out" totally "unscientific" Whats unscientific about it... There weren't many of them... Guy with net catches and kills some for whatever bizarre reason... Even less left...colony dies out... Yes, the overwh...

Re: Be there collectors here?

Apart from DNA sampling what Scientific purposes could there be for collecting UK Butterflies?

Its interesting that the example given (genitalia examination) is one for Moths rather than Butterflies...

Re: Be there collectors here?

Disgusting - but sadly not unexpected. Particularly (un) impressed by the photo's of a number of batavus Large Copper collected at Woodwalton fen in 1982 whilst simultaneously bemoaning its extinction - and a number of posters hoping for a successful reintroduction in The Broads/Somerset (no doubt t...

Nottinghamshire Purple Emperor

Anyone have any thoughts on the provenance of the Nottinghamshire Purple Emperor recorded at Cotgrave recently (Photo's here http://www.eastmidlands-butterflies.org.uk/nottinghamshire_flutterings.html ) Presumably not of natural origin - given distance from current/historic colonies...but wondered i...

Re: Hutchinsons Bank

Hutchinson's Bank looks a lovely site and its great to see that many butterflies are thriving here... But am I the only grump that thinks all the publicity/photo's etc etc the Glanvilles are getting here just encourages/validates this sort of illicit re-introduction? Apologies if that's a controvers...
