Re: Large Copper?

Thanks for that. That's really interesting and I can now see why some people believe it to be of use.
As promised I'll now shut up.

Re: Large Copper?

that, under the right circumstances, needs to be done for the greater good. Ok well that's your opinion. I personally don't believe that it does any good whatsoever. If you could provide me details of a single instance where identifying a moth by dissection has made any difference whatsoever to any...

Re: Large Copper?

Hi Pete, thanks for that I'm sure there are a lot of serious amateurs who no longer wish to have anything to do with B.C.

The Obsever's Book of Insect Genitalia. A very useful title.

What a card - I bet the cold winter nights just fly by in your house

"And my posts were responses to Dave McCormick not to you, just in case there was any confusion there"

Hi,
Sorry I got a little confused there I thought your post starting "Hi Dave" and headed with a quote from my post was addressed to me. and I don't mean the last post.

Re: Large Copper?

Felix, Interesting points but from the start I'll say that I am utterly against it and would personally and happilly stop anybody in the field I saw trying to take specimens. I'm sure you're correct that some species can only be identified by dissection however, what is the point? Fine you now know ...

Re: Large Copper?

Simple way to solve this, why not start a poll - Who disagrees with killing for identification and who agrees with killing for identification. Could someone set that up so we can get over it. Incidentally if the latter option gets more than 2 votes.......

Re: Not Leps! Birds of prey.

You'd be amazed what escapes, I remember once racing all over Sheppey trying to see a Gyr Falcon that turned out to be a hybrid and coming from Cheshire that was a waste of time! Mind you Raptors are nothing compared to wildfowl, you wouldn't believe the combinations of those that turn up. Even when...

Re: Not Leps! Birds of prey.

Hi - Sorry but it's not a Goshawk or Gyr and I do have experience with both. It's also not the same as the Portland bird from the photos. Dificult to tell what most falconers birds as they prefer hybrids but this one seems more Saker like than most. This one however appears to be an immature male Gy...

Tiny little Painted Lady around flowers in front of my office. A vividly bright example, exactly when will British PL's hatch because I'm sure this once wasn't a migrant.
I'm not exagerating the size either - I'd never do that

Re: For Canon users only

Don't want to sidetrack but to sort of add. I'm using the 30d and absolutely love it - it's a fantastic camera! The only problem being it's 8 mp and as I do a bit of distant bird photography and I'm rubbish at it I could do with higher mp's in order to crop more. Is the noise prob that noticeable wi...
