Re: Testudo Man

Resurrect away, Paul! :) The more people contribute, the better, and early stages are things most don't study so even more reason to post! Cheers for that. Good to see you back Testudo and hopefully your back is on the mend. I'm guessing that the 2nd batch presented you with a miniature version of ...

Re: July 2022

2nd brood Small Blues are now on the wing here in Kent.

3 were seen this last Saturday (only a couple of "out of focus"/blurred pics obtained) so not worth posting up those images!

Location - Darland Banks, Gillingham, Kent. Cheers Paul.

Re: White-letter Hairstreaks in my Kent garden!

A WLH was seen this morning, it landed on one of our Rose bushes...as usual, grabbed the camera asap, but the butterfly was gone! Yesterday (Sunday) at 5.55pm, a Hairstreak dropped out of the sky, an landed on the netting that covers one of our paddling pools in the back garden...This time i grabbed...

Re: June 2022

Another session at Lullingstone Country Park, in Kent (back on the 14th) chasing those pesky DGF's! Arrived on site late after work (6.30pm) didnt leave until sundown, so many of the images were golden hour/sunset shots. As usual the DGF's were the last to go to roost, an because of the high temps, ...

Re: June 2022

Yesterday was spent at 2 locations in Kent - Fackenden then on to Lullingstone, 15 species seen, shame about the wind! but a good 7 hours spent. Good numbers of both Marbled White an Dark Green Frits on the wing, an a few Small/Large Skippers. 2 female Marbled White amongst all the males, but no fem...

Re: Blue Form of Common Blue

It is at least partially developmentally plastic in some populations, this great paper was written on that a few years ago: Kertész, K., Piszter, G., Horváth, Z. E., Bálint, Z., & Biró, L. P. (2017). Changes in structural and pigmentary colours in response to cold stress in Polyommatus icar...

Re: Blue Form of Common Blue

That's another gorgeous turquoise-blue female, TM, whichever way you look at it! :) I'm on the lookout for one like that, as the females are currently emerging on my local patch, and every one is different and all are little gems. At the risk of monopolising the thread, here are three more... Here'...

Re: May 2022

Last Saturday meant a session at Queensdown Warren in Kent (i hadnt visited this site for several weeks) so it made for a nice return. Highlights were - female Adonis, Brown Argus and what looked to be a gravid female Grizzled Skipper. Numbers were still on the low side, but over 10 species seen on ...

Re: Blue Form of Common Blue

Good thread, with some lovely examples of females posted. I do like to see if i can find some nice colour variants each season myself. I also refer to some of these as "blue form", but as Dave/Millerd has suggested, they all "come under the same roof" really, with just so many co...

Re: May 2022

This last Saturday i once again returned to two locations in Kent, Bredhurst, then ended the day at Darland Banks. Out in the field for a good 7 hours+. Small Blues seem to be outnumbering anything else, an other species were once again thin on the ground, perhaps the 2nd brood Common/Adonis "B...

Re: May 2022

Yesterdays nice weather (Saturday) meant a return visit to Darland Banks (Kent) but i didnt arrive there until 2.00pm. I expected greater numbers on the wing? maybe it was a little hot for em? Things did improve later on, but apart from good numbers of Small Blues, it was quiet. Sighted 2 lovely fre...

Re: May 2022

Why do you always say “No images are cropped?” Is that supposed to be some sort of bonus? Jack Yeah Jack..............its mainly a "bonus" for me. :D On occassion, i do crop an image, but for most of my images i dont crop. What does that mean?? i guess it means that im trying to make an i...
