Re: Female Common Blue colour variations this season.

A lovely selection Paul! As you say, it does seem to have been a particularly fine year for female Common Blue colour forms. I don't think I have seen a plain brown one at all during 2021! My own personal favourite is the example shown below, not too far removed from your third image. Common Blue a...

Re: September 2021

Lovely selection of fresh Cloudies, TM. You swept the board there! Cheers for that David, i was well pleased. 6 hours+, out in the field. Cliffe Pools is a massive site, so you have to cover a lot of ground, chasing the swines!! The female helice was the least "flighty", but you...

Re: September 2021

After reading that the Clouded Yellow numbers were increasing at Cliffe Pools, Kent, i had to visit this location once more yesterday! I missed the Helice female last weekend, so needed to give it another shot. I would say that 10+ Clouded Yellow were seen (included the helice form). Females are now...

Re: September 2021

Nice images, TM, and 15 species in mid September is good going. Cheers David, yes i guess 15 species was alright for this time of year. Im not sure i will return to that site this season now?...unless a few more CY's get reported there. :D Although i would think 3rd brood Wall Brown will ...

Re: September 2021

With reports of Clouded Yellows at Cliffe Pools in Kent (including 2 helice and mating activity) i had to visit this location last Sunday. The last time i was at Cliffe Pools, must have been at least a decade ago, when huge numbers of Clouded Yellow were seen on site!! Its a massive area, so hard to...

Re: September 2021

This last Sunday (5/9/21) i visited 3 Kent sites in the one day, in the hope of finding a Clouded Yellow or two. But no such luck, none were seen...this same time last year, i was finding good numbers of fresh UK Clouded Yellows, oh well, theres always next season/year maybe?! 1st 2 sites visited wa...

Re: August 2021

This Saturday/Sunday was all about the Adonis Blues for me... That last shot is really unusual, Paul. The butterfly is holding its left side normally, yet the right side is 'fanned out' quite extensively. I don't think I've ever seen such a pose, and the fact that it's a male Adonis makes for a gre...

Re: August 2021

This Saturday/Sunday was all about the Adonis Blues for me. Saturday was hard going, once again taking shelter under trees for several times during the day! Sunday was better, because less wind an no rain. Just 3 females seen on Sat, but up to 8 females found on Sun. Males were 3x that of the female...

Re: August 2021

Great to see another Clouded Yellow, TM. Just when we thought conditions were set fair, along came a persistent north-westerly wind to keep them firmly on the continent. :( Always good to see Clouded Yellows David, im hoping to see a few more before the season comes to an end. The last week of Augu...

Re: August 2021

Had a pretty good weekend just gone. Visited 2 Kent sites on Sunday, an just the one site on Saturday. Saturday was all about the SSS's, not high numbers yet, but a good session. Location Queensdown Warren in Kent. Sunday was more of the same, but as well as Queensdown Warren, late in the afternoon ...

Re: August 2021

Visited 2 Kent sites at the start of August, an found 2 interesting CHB variants. Images are not cropped, cheers Paul. I guess this fresh female CHB, could be the most common ab. seen? she showed a nice amount of blue to her hind wings, she certainly stood out amongst the rest of the normal females....

Re: July 2021

Yesterday (Sat 24th) i took a trip to Darland Banks, Gillingham, Kent. I had seen a few Chalk Hill Blues on another site at the start of the week, but knew that better numbers could be found at Darland Banks. I was not wrong, there was an explosion of Chalk Hill Blues, i saw 100's on the wing, with ...

Re: replacement camera.

Hi Allan, as far as im aware (but i could be wrong) both the Panny FZ72 an FZ82 do not have Leica lenses, that most of the other FZ range have. If you do a search/google on both those cameras, then im sure it should tell you if they had Leica lenses or not. I think Panasonic made both those cameras ...

Re: July 2021

The 1st of July, saw a return trip (ater work) to see if any female DGF's had emerged. At least 3 females were sighted, one had a large part of wing missing (possible bird attack?). Location Kent. No images are cropped. Cheers Paul. One of the female DGF's. P1280946-copy-to-600.jpg P1280922-copy-to-...

Re: June 2021

There must have been something in the air in south Essex on a largely sunny day yesterday (26th). First were the White-letter Hairstreaks near Hadleigh/Leigh-on-Sea...WLH pair1 260621.JPG...then the Heath Fritillaries in Pound Wood a few miles inland.HF pair1 260621.JPGGood numbers of fresh example...

Re: June 2021

More of the same this/last Saturday, an despite the forecast of a very high pollen count, i still went out from 1.00pm to 7.00pm. Strangely enough, i showed hardly any symptoms of Hayfever this time?!!!(which was a massive relief)....2 locations visited in Kent, with both areas good for DGF's an MW'...

Re: June 2021

Finished work early today, so thought i would go for DGF's an MW's. Hayfever was just starting to kick off, but i still went out anyway  Had a pretty good session, sighting both target species, but i had to "cut it short", an "throw in the towel". My hayfever went crazy, no...
