Re: Marsh Fritillary - Favourite Photo of 2018

So many lovely photos here-above. In the south of France, not far from Marseilles, on the border with the Var département , our local Marsh Fritillary is Euphydryas aurinia possibly provinicialis . Here, at 650 metres altitude, their cats have two host plants which can be found immediately side by s...

Re: Large Tortoiseshell - Favourite Photo of 2018

The great thing about Large Tortoiseshells, at least here in the south of France, is that they give you the impression that winter is nearly over. Particularly down here where it can still be cold but with brilliant blue skies. They boost the moral. The game for me is to see how early I can spot one...

Re: Large Blue - Favourite Photo of 2018

This is an exciting species for me. In the South of France I need to move out of my local vicinity to even hope to see one. This one was seen in the South West of France in the "Landes" département in July. Apparently a female laying on Origanum vulgare . arion3 on Origanum vulgare Buanes_...

Re: Holly Blue - Favourite Photo of 2018

Strangely enough, my only photo this year was from a botanical garden right in the centre of Granada, Spain, in August.
This garden was part of the university.
Its good to see butterflies in built-up areas.

My contribution is from the South of France at 650 m altitude.
This species is not widespread and it helps to know the colonies.

ID for a caterpillar please

Hi Folks, Today I saw this cat. in the south of France. It mesured around 16 mm and was climbing along some dead fennel, although I don't think that that is significant. I am intrigued. Any ideas for its ID ? Thanks, Chris Copie de chenille Parc du Griffon 22Nov18 (17).JPG Copie de chenille Parc du ...

Thanks David, I hope winter will be short. I'm already looking forward to next year's early species. Thanks Guy for your encouraging words. Truly flattering coming from yourself. I will try and keep observations coming when I can. Hi Folks, South of France, November: There has been a bit of Red Admi...

Still from the south of France. A token photo of this species as my focus has wandered to other domains. cinxia27 La Taurelle 22Apr18.JPG With so many aspects of butterflies and their early stages and their host plants and environments, it is easy to miss out on basic photos of the adults themselves...

Re: Green Hairstreak - Favourite Photo of 2018

The white hairstreak on that Green Hairstreak is quite remarkable, Guy. I havn't seen one that well marked at my lattitude. My photo is from the south of France at the beginning of April, at 650 m altitude. The nectar must have been good from this tree because the GH kept coming back persistently, d...
