Re: March 2024

A sunny morning in London yesterday but overcast later. My partner spotted a male Brimstone flying in the back garden, which I missed seeing by seconds. Our first garden butterfly sighting of the year. On my morning walk spotted my first Small Tortoiseshell of the year on a Tree Heather & a Peac...

Re: March 2024

After seeing Jan/Feb Red Admirals, hadn't seen a butterfly for over 3 weeks until yesterday. Went with friends to Dick Fock's Common, Surrey for birds where Goshawk, 2 Hawfinch, several Crossbills & Marsh Tit were the highlights. Some pleasant sunshine brought out well over 10 male Brimstones, 2...

Re: February 2024

Yesterday had my weekly visit to Kew Gardens & as I approached the rock garden, having just been listening to a drumming Great Spotted Woodpecker, noticed a butterfly fly across. Raising my binoculars could see it was an expected Red Admiral. It then settled on a flowering Viburnum x bodnantense...

Re: February 2024

I was coming back from Richmond Park after midday & I was at the front of the top deck of a bus which was stationary at a stop when 2 Red Admirals flew across the road-not sure if a courting couple or 2 arguing males?

4 butterflies so far this year, but just one species!

Re: Another Egyptian Specimen

Green Drab, Ophiusa tirhaca. I know this is regular in Spain, so presumably more widespread.

Re: January 2024

I had my first on Wednesday- 2 Red Admirals at Kew Gardens, a week after the icy blast. Noticed quite a few butterfly images on FB that day-mostly Red Admirals, but also Brimstone, Peacock & Comma. Small Tortoiseshell reported yesterday in London, though quite a fresh breeze.

Re: Politically incorrect names.

And don’t get me started on birds. The Arctic squa has become the Arctic jaeger, the great northern diver is now a loon... Grrr. That's nothing to what has been proposed; though I don't know any UK birders who say loons or jaegers. The American Ornithological Society has proposed to change all Engl...

Re: Cuba Preview

Love shots that uplift the spirits. Certainly some of these are familiar to me from the Florida Everglades. Sounds like a great trip.

Re: December 2023

Had my first butterfly this month yesterday. As I was raking some leaves off my father's lawn I detected something fluttering to my right from the corner of my eyes. As I turned around there was a Red Admiral fluttering along the fence. I'm guessing I must have disturbed it. After weakly fluttering ...

Re: Egyptian Specimen

Grass Webworm, Herpetogramma licarcisalis.

There were a couple of English records recently amongst many other migrants. I believe one record prior to these.

Re: October 2023

Noticed there was a fair bit of excitement on Scilly yesterday with an American Painted Lady on St. Mary's found along with more expected Monarch. Think there's a small number of the latter about with at least one in Dorset too in the Portland area & on the Cornish coast. Of course the latter ma...
