Re: Scarce, Cistus or just a Forester,

hi Crispin
i am no expert, but MOths of the Uk, differentiates between the scarce and common using the antanae, with the scarce forester having a tapered end, and also a lack of feathering on the last 3 segment of the blade on the male, not sure if that helps,

Re: South East Scotland moth Caterpillars?

hi
i am no expert,
but i think the first may be the fox moth caterpillar, the 2nd maybe the garden tiger one, and the 3rd possibly a hawkmoth, if the thing at the end is a spike, but i am not sure about the spike,
hope that helps,

Is this fox moth caterpillar

hi I found this today along the banks of the crinan canal, my friend wanted to keep it,to allow her children to see it develop into a coccon, then moth, but i think it might be a fox moth, possibly, and if it is, then the book says it overwinters as a larvae, so possibly better to put it back out ag...

Re: moth or butterfly

hi hari
many thanks for the quick identification, not very good on moths, despite doing 2 courses, must try harder, is it really red data book, as my field guide to moths suggests, the broad-bordered white underwing,
had never noticed it before, despite being in that area many times before,
