Lower Woods, Gloucestershire Whilst searching for Violet helleborines at Lower Woods I was also entertained by a good variety of butterflies. 30+ silver washed fritillary were present in varying condition. Several Essex skippers on the wing in Hailey Park, Cardiff today. Also over 120+ small skippers present. 13 species present on-site.

I was wondering if anyone knew what the state of play is with the Glanville fritillaries at Sand Point in Somerset? Is this population still holding on? Would appreciate any info.

A brief visit to Hailey Park, Cardiff yesterday (24/07/2013) to check progress of Essex skipper. Warm but too windy for photographs. Species noted:

8 Essex skippers
40 small skipper (most tatty now)
4 common blue
ringlet
40 meadow brown

Merthyr Mawr, Glamorgan

A short visit before work today. Occasional sunny spells with cloud, light westerly breeze. Totals included:

7 grizzled skippers
12 dingy skippers
10 brown argus
2 g v white
1 wall brown
4 small heath
8 common blue

I am sure it would have been more but when it clouded over the temperature plummeted.

Rodborough Common

Kenfig NNR, South Wales. Sunny warm conditions with fresh wind.
4 dingy skipper, 1 small blue, 4 orange-tip, 1 brimstone and 1 speckled wood. Plenty of early purple orchid in flower too.
