Re: At last a different Species
Same here in Cambridge - it has been so cool and damp everything seems to be waiting for the sun!
I have seen 1 Large White in the last 2 weeks in my local cemetery - and I pass though it at least 4 times a day!
Not seen a Meadow Brown yet either.,,or a Ringlet. Anything would be a bonus!

Re: Tips on what camera to get
It was an Olympus. Denise Don't know the Olympus - I used a Panasonic FZ50 + Panasonic "close-up" lens before my current set-up. And it produced good results; members of this forum use them to good effect.....and I really miss the DoF that they give over a DSLR! One feature that ALL DSLR ...

Re: Tips on what camera to get
[quote="Denise" The size was good, and it was quite light, but the images I got were very disappointing. I tried and tried to get on with it (as it wasn't cheap) but failed. Perhaps it was just me as I know other people who use them, but I love my Canon camera now, and wouldn't swap back f...

Re: The local Council !
I too watch with horror as all the nectar sources and food plants are mown down in my local cemetery as part of the maintenance program! When I tell people there are gold crests, sparrow hawks, even weasels, in the cemetery they react with total surprise. I too hear complaints about it being too &qu...

..(mind you with my abysmal success rate with White-letter, lots of eyes looking for that too could be an advantage). Jack Where have you been looking, Jack? I haven't looked or seen any near Cambridge, even tho' Sharon Hearle reported nr Newmarket on Cambs & Essex BC site. N BTW - August date ...

Re: Glapthorne & Chequered Skipper
Nice photos Chris, Paul and Rog. I totally agree with Rog regarding "the craic" (as they say in Ireland). Kevin and I were discussing future get-togethers and thought it would be a good idea to try some other venues in future, perhaps targeting other "tricky" species or even for...

Caterpillar ID please
Found in old chalk pit with Common Blue and Brown Argus flying. About 5mm long. My first thought is early larval Common Blue...but no doubt I'm wrong.
Any help please?

Re: Butterflies effected by high voltage power lines
yes areas with woodland do seem to run a bit of a contradiction. All of my sites were meadow or hedgerow sites. Yeah - in Pound Wood, for instance, in Essex, the BEST place for Heath Frits is below the power lines...again, because the trees must be felled to keep the power lines clear. Now they are...

Re: Recording your Sightings
Trawling the various BC Branch websites does highlight the differences in collection and reporting/recording of sightings. (When I stray out of Cambs & Essex I generally look for places to report what I have seen). Some will only accept sightings through filling-in the rather daunting form that ...

My only comment is to point to the Annual Competition, where there is no room for controversy, as it is blind......
And it is interesting to note the winners there....

Got bored waiting for them to settle and fired off a few random shots. Makes you realise how difficult catching them is!
