Re: Encourage birds and loose the butterflies?
I was told a while ago that if you feed birds that usually stay during winter some small bits of fried bacon, they grow fatter quicker and won't need to go far to look for food and will survive well over winter and possibly stay in your garden. I was told that works for robins anyway. All I can say...
Re: S.A.D?
Terrible to suffer SAD like that; I think many people probably suffer but do not recognise it. My fiancee is Finnish - and if I retire to the back of beyond in Finland (a vague plan - 2 times the number of butterflies in Finland compared to UK!!!) I have already thought about the Light Box solution ...

Re: September 2008
On the other hand, I could have been making a reference to all realities exist simultaneously and the egg, caterpillar and butterfly being one and the same because time is, in fact, an illusion .. . Existentialism breaks out on UKB! (Perhaps we should get that great French thinker, Eric Cantona, to...

Re: Holly Blue larvae
Nice one Pete! My local Cemetery is full of Holly Blue in the season. I go through every day to and from work and keep a look out on some of the ivy clumps - but never seen anything yet! Mind you there is so much ivy , it is the proverbial needle in the haystack! But your story encourages me to keep...

Re: September 2008
.... What I actually want are some Brimstone caterpillars to fly into my garden and lay eggs on the alder buckthorn bushes which are growing here specifically for them. Maybe it will happen next spring. :D If the caterpillars can fly, then no doubt they will be closely followed by the flying pigs a...

Re: What do butterfly enthusiasts do during the winter months?
Me? Already booked up with my mate for off-road biking up the "East Anglian Heights" most Saturdays! Also some management of my local (mature) Cemetery; that is, keep the "tidy-brigade", who think that mown-grass looks nice, at bay and remind them that it doesn't do much for the ...

The problem is, when you are a bloke, over a certain age, that gravity takes over your hair !
Instead of growing from the top of your head, it migrates and starts to sprout out from your nose, ears and eye-brows, taking the route of least resistance....sadly!

Re: Which 'macro lens' advise
Marc, I too have a 400D and also use the Tamron 90mm and would throughly recommend this lens. :) My only bug bear is that the 400D can be noisey when shooting raw at ISO 400 and even ISO 200 with the shutter speed around 1/50 sec. Roll on the 50D. Colin Ah - Nikon do seem to be a little better on t...

Re: Which 'macro lens' advise
Firstly, congratulations on being a member of the Canonista. (Can't win them all I suppose! N) I have no experience of the Tamron or Tokina, but I bet they are pretty good - as all specialist lenses like this will be. Roger I believe they do make Tamron for Canonista's - tho' I'm happy with my Tamr...

Re: Can someone recommend an idiot proof camera
No one has mentioned the Panasonic DMC-FZ18 with LUMIX lens, the 18 is the zoom, you can buy a close-up lens, wide lenes and additional zoom lenes. The camera cost about £200. Not a bad choice.... I was looking at my old butterfly images taken with the Panasonic FZ50 + close-up lens and also some o...

Summer (!) weather 2008
I'm sure we all suffered like the butterflies from the wet summer. Interesting extract from BBC Weather: http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/ukweather/monthly_outlook.shtml "Temperatures differed little from normal for the time of year but interestingly it has been a very windy summer - one of the win...
