Surely some mistake here?
(Mind you maths was never my strong point!)

Top 4 spot-on - JohnB & Eccles tied for 3rd. Great shots all! Difficult to top FISHiEE tho!
Love the detail and sharpness in the water-droplets...

Re: Macro lens for micro moths?

I just bought a Kenko Pro 1.4TC to add to my Tamron 90mm macro. Works well, keeps AF - loose 1 f-stop - and results (with limited testing) seem acceptable.
Can search for AF and be slow sometimes - but that is generally true of the Tamron... :)

Re: Highs and Lows of 2008

Highs - Seeing Swallowtails flitting around (v. few decent photo ops tho) at Strumpshaw and Purple Emperor in Fermyn Woods And the few fine days when butterflies were flying... :) Lows - Going to Totternhoe too early - no Small Blue or Dukes around! (And seeing one field where I saw Dingy Skippers t...

Re: Clouded Yellow larva

Certainly in August 2006 on the Dorset Coast near Swanage, there were more than I have ever seen before (1 in E. Anglia). In the end, I stopped chasing them (to my son's delight!) - must have seen dozens on the coast path by the end of the week! So it is probable that these were the proginy of an ea...

Re: Flight Seasons

In other words - given the right environment, with stable and suitable weather, many butterflies can respond by developing quickly and even double-brooding should a run of seasons, or a single particular season or locality be particularly good? Or they will emerge and be seen later when cooler weath...

Re: Flight Periods - Have they really changed?

Interesting Dave. I saw Holly Blue in every month of the season from April to September this year (at different sites) - but I would only expect that to be two broods overlapping slightly rather than 3. There were certainly signs of 3 broods from the Small Heath in my part of the world around Cambri...

Flight Periods - Have they really changed?

Was discussing this with JackHarr. We are both planning for our particular target species and trying to predict what the season will be THIS year! (Will this cold snap put the season back, bearing in mind that we have not had a cold snap quite like this in the UK for a while, for instance..........?...

Re: Taking Purple Emperors.

This is perhaps a bit off topic (well off the original topic) but I'm interested to know your views on organic farming as a way of promoting a healthy countryside Guy I for one mostly (I can't say always) buy organic (I don't have any kids to feed tho', so cost is not the same issue for me as some)...

Re: Taking Purple Emperors.

Sure! There are always winners and loosers! ... birders don't like the idea of scrub being removed from some sites to make way for butterfly meadows... for instance! Cutting down grasses to the roots may suite Chalkhill Blues, but not Skippers, etc, etc. Much of the time it is down to the value-judg...

Re: Taking Purple Emperors.

Too few people .... as always, can be two or more sides to any story. I have known instances of when a landowner has been alerted to the presence of a local species ( ie. Marsh Fritillary ) on their property ..... the ploughs and bulldozers arrived shortly afterwards. Coincidence? Yeah ... right! T...
