Re: Marseilles and its region 2016

You may be sad you missed the emergence, but wow, what a lovely set of photos of a pristine swallowtail.

Re: September 2016

Over the past couple of years I've been planting pollinator-friendly plants, and today it really paid dividends because I had a hummingbird hawk-moth in my garden here in north-east London. I'm so pleased! https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8654/29505734112_6f8e46838e_z.jpg Hummingbird Hawk-Moth (Macrogl...

Chris, those auspicious burnet moths are beautiful, and wonderfully captured while courting. Thanks for posting them.

Re: Help with moth ID please

Many thanks Trev. Seems like it's something of a pest ... now I don't feel so bad about being a complete muppet the following morning by accidentally treading on it

Help with moth ID please

What species of moth is this please? It's not one I've come across before. Location is north-east London.

Re: A long way from home

We visited the Natural History Museum event last year and there were no monarchs. That's not to say they don't have any this year of course. Highly recommended if you're in the area by the way, and you can buy tickets next to it with no queue, i.e. you don't have to wait in the massive queue for the...

Re: May 2016

Plenty of orange tip, a few brimstone and two peacock seen at Fishers Green reserve near Waltham Abbey in Essex. The main purpose of the trip was to listen to nightingales which proved successful (and I saw one!).

Re: September 2015

Very happy to report that my insert-friendly planting in my north-east London garden continues to pay dividends, along with regular dead-heading prolonging the flowering. Today saw two painted ladies and various whites making use of the buddlejas, and a couple of holly blue flitting amongst the ivy ...

Re: June 2015

A little research online reveals it's the larva of the mullein moth. The information I found online says it usually chomps a plant called mullein, but it can often be found munching buddleja in gardens. Nice find Nick and thanks for sharing. I have seen the larvae numerous times on Verbascum (grega...

Re: June 2015

I've been busy replanting with insect-friendly plants recently, including quite a few buddlejas. I was rather surprised this evening to find this striking larva on one of the latter: mullein.jpg A little research online reveals it's the larva of the mullein moth. The information I found online says ...

Re: May 2015

I joined an RSPB walk this morning at Fishers Green nature reserve near Waltham Abbey in Essex, primarily to hear Nightingales (we heard about 4). Plenty of butterflies too, I lost count of male orange tips, and managed to photograph a female. Quite a few other whites flying, some probably female or...

Locations

I was wondering what people's thoughts would be on trying to perhaps add a little more detail on locations when posting sightings. I very much enjoy reading what people have seen, and viewing photos of them. It's great to know whereabouts the sighting are too, but often the location given is just a ...

Re: April 2015

Working from home today on the London/Essex border, due to the Central Line being broken. This meant I could spend lunch wildlife watching in the garden. The weather was sunny with a light breeze. I saw three male holly blues, two of which had a short battle before one left and the presumed victor s...

Re: Converting slides to digital, advice?

Rather than wait for a bright cloudy day, try using your computer monitor with a predominantly white screen (e.g. by opening a text editor or word processor and not typing anything in). Just point your contraption at that and see how you get on.

Eggs on Buddleia

I was wondering if somebody could identify these eggs for me please? They've been laid on the leaf of a young Buddleia 'Silver Anniversary' and whatever laid them has then rolled up the leaf and stuck it together with silk. I realise they may not be butterfly, or even moth eggs, but hopefully somebo...
