A day to remember,2011

Prologue My purpose for my visit to Denbies was to photograph the butterflies of this beautiful landscape on the Northdowns in Surrey. Situated in the small village of Ranmore and behind the larger village of Westcott on the A25. I did manage to photograph these lovely insects, but not one of the sp...

Re: Silver-spotted Skipper - Favourite Photo of 2011

Hi Neil, When i first started butterflying i found it hard to distinguish the male from the female in certain species when they were sitting with their wings closed, and could`nt see the abdomen. So i started looking for other ways to identify the male and female. One of these was the eye, and found...

Re: Silver-spotted Skipper - Favourite Photo of 2011

I had followed a fresh female at a distance hoping a male would seek her out, and mate. Following her proved to be difficult at the best of times, as i`m sure you all know. I lost her a couple of times, but managed to locate her again on each occasion. Eventually a Eagle eyed male spotted her, she h...

This is my contribution, two pictures taken at Oaken Wood. The numbers of S.W.F. were very low here this year,
and i did`nt manage to photograph a female, infact i only saw three indivduals.

Re: Ringlet - Favourite Photo of 2011

This picture was taken at Oaken Wood on the 10th July. I was joined by Mark Colvin and his son James for a few hours photographing butterflies. If i remember correctly it was quite hard work as these lovely insects seemed to be in hiding, the weather not being that great. But i believe we all came u...

Re: Red Admiral - Favourite Photo of 2011

Now and again i like to experiment when taking pictures, most of the time i throw them out, but this is one i kept. 17.9.2011 003-1_1.jpg It was taken with the white balance mode on tungston, hence the colour of the leaves. 15,5,2011 189_1.jpg I like this one because of the camouflage this butterfly...

Hi Guy, So you went out and found some Brown Hairstreaks eggs of your own. Are Brown Hairstreaks common in your neck of the woods? Love the Lizard, such a beautiful colour. Also love the picture of the snow covered mountain, i`m just mesmerized by such scenery. The first time i flew over the alps th...

Re: Ringlet - Favourite Photo of 2011

I found the Ringlet on my patch for the first time in 2011 - in all likelihood, I'd managed to overlook it before. This is the first one I found, on the very sunny evening of 30th June. I don't think they care for bright sunshine much, and they kept making for the cover of nearby trees. Dave They t...

Hi Guy, When i found the eggs yesterday it was raining, i found five in total, but i expect there were more as i did`nt check thoroughly. So i went back today to photograph them when the sun was out. Re: Sightings january 2012

I nipped out yesterday and found a few Brown Hairstreaks eggs very close to my home. I only found one there in 2010, on the same group of Blackthorn stems so it looks like things are looking better for the B.H. here. eggs 001_1.jpg Here are some pictures. eggs 003_1_1.jpg Well, its the closest i`m g...
