Re: October 2011 sightings

Late morning i saw 2 Red Admirals in the garden so i thought i would leave the wife indoors, again  and go in search of butterflies. so i decided to drive to a small village called Forest Green, park there and walk towards Leithhill Tower. Walking northwards out of the car park i encounted my ...

Re: Essex Skipper ID please

I agree with Guy, after scrutinizing both pictures i can see a sex brand in each picture. In the case of a s.skipper the sex brand is bold and curved, but with the e. skipper the sex brand is straight and thin.

Re: October 2011 sightings

I did`nt manage to get out and about today, [watching the rugby world cup and then motor racing on the box] but i was watching to see what came into the garden. my first visiter was a humming-bird hawkmoth feeding on honeysuckle, seen 3 times during the morning. then a red admiral visited, 4 seen. Re: Painted Lady

Hi David

The Painted Lady in the top picture looks over exposed to me. It looks like the colouration is due to the sun hitting the wings.

Re: Wurzel

Hi Wurzel I`m sorry to hear you are getting rid of your new lens. I was waiting for your results [pictures] before giving an opinion, or saying anything. I was hoping the manufacturer would have improved the lens since i purchased mine, it seems they have`nt. I hope you don`t think i was trying to m...

Re: Chalkhill Blue - Favourite Photo of 2011

I spent a lot of time on Denbie Hill from late July, until the end of August.(Yes, i love the place). Chalkhill Blues were out in very large numbers, which made it easier for the photographer, talk about spoiled for choice. So out of the many pictures i took this is one of my favourites. It was take...

Re: October 2011 sightings

This morning i popped out for a couple of hours to my local patch, Oaken wood. Hopefully to photograph Brimstones for the third weekend running. Alas no Brimstones, but i did see five Red Admirals, all heading south, two stopped for a brief moment to bask in the October sun, One Comma and two very w...

Re: Hairy Brown Caterpillar

It certainly looks like the caterpillar of the moth Buff Ermine to me. The larval foodplants are a wide range of herbaceous plants, honeysuckle, hop, common nettle, barberry and birches. It is found in gardens amongst other habitats. I hope that helps Sammy.

Re: Adonis Blue - Favourite Photo of 2011

I arrived at Denbies at about 4.40pm. it was overcast with the usual wind in attendance but was still hopeful of getting a few pictures. It was roughly 7 o`clock when i took this picture and the light was poor so i was rather pleased with the end result. The picture was taken on the 29.8.2011. shoot...

hi wurzel do you set your new lens on macro when you are using it? i used the same lens, or very similar and used macro all the time. it takes a bit of getting used to but worth it in the end. i had never used a macro lens before. here is a picture i took with my sigma 70-300 macro hideandseek

By the way the other chap you mention in short story was me.

Re: your favourite photo

hi again Chris thats better, but i would of left the flower stem in the picture and trimmed as you have. my opinion. i sometimes trim a picture more than once, until i am happy with the end result. the main subject of the picture can be at the top, bottom, left or right as long as it looks right, as...
