Re: Sad news about a UK Butterflies member.

I have only just come across this post...and the sad news, after a visit to Haugh Wood this afternoon. I can see why Bill loved it there so much.
I only met Bill once, at Whitecross Green Wood, he was there with David M. What a lovely gent. He will be missed..on the forum..and in the woods :(

Re: Cerne Abbas

Certainly the Hod Hill count for Marsh Frits in 2013 doesnt look too encouraging. However i visited the site on a sunny day in June 2012 and found at least 20 individuals on the wing and displaying well in the south facing ditch. Perhaps 2013 was just a bad year. Please keep us posted if anyone goes...

Re: May 2014

A promise of fair, if not sunny weather ,tempted me down to Bentley Wood (eastern clearing) today, in search of PBF and Duke of Burgundy. I arrived on site at 0930 and there was already someone there who pointed out 2 individual PBFs for me straight away.Within the next half an hour or so, many more...

Re: Purple Emperors this Weekend

Having had two good days at Botany Bay this week with PE, i can thoroughly recommend it.There seem to be good numbers there and although they are present throughout the wood, there do seem to be a couple of hotspots. My guess is that saturday will still be good for them, weather permitting and judging ...

Re: July 2013

Yesterday at Botany Bay saw a large crowd gather waiting for an audience with HIM, the purple emperor.Although plenty were flying in the trees, none were keen to land, until butterfly wrangler and part-time conjurer Neil Hulme produced a pristine example from nowhere.Apparently it just "landed o...

Re: July 2013

A visit to Botany Bay was the order of the day on Friday, but despite the weather forecast being for heat and sun, myself and Caroline were treated to cool and overcast....for the first 2 hours anyway.Only the bravest Meadow Browns and Ringlets came out to remind us we were in one of the best butterf...
