Re: Pauline

Those are the first Wood White pictures I’ve seen, Pauline. Were they at Chiddingfold Forest, Botany Bay complex?

Re: Pauline

Those dead heads are lesser knapweed, of hardheads. If present, Dingy Skippers will almost always use them, in my experience at least. But anything dead or brown seems to suffice!

That’s a lovely Holly Blue, Goldie.

Don’t forget to set a bit of time aside for Grizzled Skipper hunting this month!

Re: RFI Breney Common, Cornwall

Hi Edward, You might be slightly early for Marsh Fritillaries, but I have found them, not surprisingly, in the marshy, flat areas, where the caterpillar foodplant, Devils bit scabious, grows. Once you’re on the site, you need to follow the path, through some willow scrub, to reach the open, wet area...

Re: essex buzzard

The north Essex anemones were a little late appearing this year, and it wasn’t until 17 April that the weather was suitable for a visit. Numbers seemed slightly down on last year. Perhaps last years drought has had a temporary effect. However, these lovely, simple flowers were a still sight to behol...

Re: Neil Freeman

I like the Torts as well. They are present here, but in low numbers. I think last years drought did for them here. With the lush growth on nettles, let’s hope they bounce back in early summer.

The Orange Tip on the white Spanish bluebell is rather nice, too.

Glad you succeeded, David. Lovely shots.

Guessing you’re seeing plenty of yellow orange tips in ESP at the moment...

Re: essex buzzard

Thanks everyone. I’d say the orange was on the light side, Wurzel. Yes David, a very welcome surprise indeed! Hi Goldie. I reckon you might see one this weekend, if the sun shines! Well, the sun shone at last on Tuesday, my day off. This allowed for my first proper butterfly day of the year! It was ...

21C in north-west Scotland this week. I bet they’re seeing more than us at the moment. We all need a holiday up there, I think!

Re: essex buzzard

Thanks Wurzel. Let’s hope so. The nettles are certainly lush this spring, with all the rain we’re having... Thanks David. It remains tough going round these parts. There has been no let up in the weather, with cloud, rain, and a bit of wind thrown in for good measure. So imagine my surprise, and del...

Re: essex buzzard

Hi Pauline, welcome back! Despite reasonable spells of sunshine on Sunday, a walk to my local hotspot produced just three Small Tortoiseshell and three Peacock. Both species seemed to suffer in last years drought. Tortoiseshells in particular, appear to benefit from warm, wet summers such as 2021, a...

Re: essex buzzard

Welcome to April. March was very wet, with some places recording three times the average rainfall. Indeed, parts of East Anglia received more rain in March than in the whole winter! Meanwhile, sunshine was very deficient, with just half the average. The river Roding, pictured here, is lined with net...

Re: essex buzzard

Thanks Neil and Wurzel. Yes, the weather this month has been absolutely dreadful. Sunshine has been very deficient, and the rain has been seemingly endless. Indeed my garden was flooded this evening when I got home, though not the house, thankfully. But surely the first warm, sunny spells of the yea...

Re: essex buzzard

At last! Although rather cold, Monday was the brightest day since February! The sun is getting much stronger now, and it was just enough tempt this Comma out of hibernation. This time last year there were half a dozen in this spot in my local woods, but this year, this one was all I could manage. No...

Be sure to find a sunny spot for your lavender and Bowles Mauve wallflowers, Goldie. Otherwise, the butterflies won’t go on them!

Re: Tenerife - 7th to 12th March 2023

20 species may not seem that many, but how many would you have seen had you stayed in Wales?

Probably none.

So I’d say that’s pretty good for mid March.

Your spontaneous decision to head abroad paid off!
