Re: Forum Images
Got an example? I think you provided the clue by mentioning image size. I have just used the Test thread to post two images. The smaller image (400x300) adds the filename, size, number times viewed to the caption and has no border, while the larger image (640x480) has a border but no added caption....

Re: Forum Images
I'm puzzled! When I add an image attachment, I upload a file from my computer, add a comment, and place it inline. Sometimes it appears in a frame, sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes it adds the filename, size, and number of times viewed below the image: other times, not. I thought I did the same p...

Re: A Few Butterflies from Kent
When I have pics of the same butterfly with the 300mm and the 90mm, I find that I almost always prefer the closer shot. Perhaps it's just a matter of taste or the greater sense of achievement!Gruditch wrote:Don't know what Mike's on about there.

Re: A Few Butterflies from Kent
what is a good Macro lens to get? Judging by those pics, you're doing a great job with the 300mm! I often use my (Nikon) 70-300mm zoom to get initial shots and then, if the butterfly is benign, move in with my 90mm Tamron macro. While longer focal length macros (eg 200mm) are often recommended for ...

Here's a few pics from my collection, which show how difficult it can be. I have no doubt that this first one is an Essex: EssexSkipper.jpg The next one has been in my files as an Essex but, I now believe that this close-up shows it to be a Small: SmallSkipper.jpg I took several photos of this secon...

I'll stick my neck out and go for Small. Antennae seem chisel-ended and there is a hint of pale colour at the tip, especially on the right-hand side, though it may be a trick of the light. Splendid photo, as usual for your posts, and definitely a Smessex!!!

After a slightly disappointing day at Fermyn on Monday, I visited my local Bernwood Forest yesterday (Thurs 14th) One oak tree in particular was 'teeming' with Purple Hairstreaks, and one female gave me a flash of her purple! PurpleHfem.jpg Although the wind was blowing the leaves about, I managed t...

Re: Variation in chalkhill blues
when does normal variation end and aberration begin? Why is it that simple questions can make familiar terms become suddenly difficult? I had a look at my copy of Russwurm "Aberrations of British Butterflies" to see if there was an answer to be found there. All I could see was "When ...

Thanks Pete - it's something I have just missed noticing before! I've revised my posting to describe it as a variation rather than an aberrant.

Pamber Forest The new generation of Red Admiral are also starting to emerge - I saw 4 in total, all absolutely pristine. I noticed that your Red Admiral photo has white dots inside the red band, like one I saw at Fermyn a couple of days ago. At the time, I thought it was an aberration but I have re...

I think the Grayling shots are splendid, too. You did well to get the eyespots showing - in my experience, they flick their wings down very soon after landing, so you must have been quick off the mark. Once the forewing is down, they're almost invisible - I didn't realise, at first, that there were t...

Hi Dave, I'm pleased to hear that you are homing in on a decision. I have always been a stills photographer and have rather avoided video, as it seems a very different game. If your current camera isn't working properly then it's almost certainly better to replace it, since repairs are always expens...

Re: What to do?
I suggest you need to decide first whether you are primarily into video or still photography. A DLSR is not an ideal video camera so, if video is your thing, then look for a proper videocam. If you want to stick with DSLR photography, I would look at your lenses before the camera body. Good quality ...

We went to Fermyn Wood in glorious sunshine yesterday (Monday 11th). Heavy traffic around Silverstone delayed our arrival until about 10.30am. Despite plenty of cars in the mouth of the ride opposite the gliding club, there were surprisingly few butterflies on the wing. A visit to the Western ride f...

Brilliant day had and one we will never forgot. Congratulations on completing your 'British list' and in such a memorable way! Curiously, I found MR quite early in my butterflying days - quite by chance, after scrambling up the Dungeon Ghyll ravines in Langdale. I've never seen a mating pair and, a...

I've been toying with the idea of buying a High Speed camcorder For several years, Casio have been producing a range of high-speed still cameras with frame rates up to 40 fps. They don't seem to do much marketing and I don't know anyone who has used one, but there is a review at http://www.dpreview...
