Re: Orange-tip - Favourite Photo of 2018

My photo was taken during a family walk along the River Evenlode near North Leigh Roman Villa. It was rather cool and drizzly, so this sighting provided an unexpected 'bright spot' on the day:

Re: Advice for a friend

When I visited Sabah in 2015, I chose an Olympus E-M5 camera for reasons explained on my website at http://home.btconnect.com/mike.flemming/Sabah2015/Sabah2015.htm In my opinion bridge cameras are frustratingly slow for wildlife, leading to missed shots, while DLSRs, or at least their lenses, are to...

Re: Meadow Brown - Favourite Photo of 2018

This pale example was very well camouflaged amongst the sun-burned, cut grass on Otmoor, Oxon. MeadowBrown_2018.jpg (my ISO setting was high, because I had been combing the hedgerows for Brown Hairstreaks and literally stumbled on this pale Brown in the open meadow - success with the BH came later t...

My photo was taken in a relative's 'wild garden' in Somerset. We were pleased to find that the Marbled Whites had just emerged, in time for her Birthday party!

Re: Holly Blue - Favourite Photo of 2018

For my 'favourite', I return to a fortuitous encounter with a mating pair, which I spotted outside my 'office' window while I was processing some earlier butterfly photos. I've previously described the encounter in detail in my diary . I selected this particular shot because it shows both the mating...

Re: Goldie M

I agree with Bugboy: that's a very handsome male. You might want to check the flight-lines between that tree and your feeders, so that you don't make it too easy for him. We put some netting across the direct path, to deter the Sprawks from using our feeders as a fast-food outlet.

Re: Gatekeeper - Favourite Photo of 2018

This species had a disappointing year locally. I saw the first one on 21st June, but after a brief peak in mid-July, the last sighting was very early - 1st August. Here is a pairing from 9th July.GK pair2 090718.JPG Dave A beautiful photo, Dave, I love the soft colours and the way the butterflies s...

Why have one or two when you can have four? My photo was taken during a memorable visit to the local Garden Centre, during the hot and dry summer. Numbers of both Small and GvWhites were 'mud-puddling' where hoses had been used on the plants. I chose this particular photo, from the many that I took,...

iPhone photo technology

For some time, iPhones have been leading 'real' cameras in several ways, especially in terms of their user interface. At the UK Butterflies recent 'social', I showed some of the members there one of the newest capabilities available on recent iPhone models. Software enables them to create the out-of...

Re: Green Hairstreak - Favourite Photo of 2018

All my photos of Green Hairstreaks this year were taken during one memorable day at Bradenham Woods. Most of my photos were conventional side-on photos, so I chose this one as being a little different and for showing the brilliance of the iridescent colour in sunlight.

Re: Goldie M

When I see the young Starlings in the garden, I find it quite easy to accept that birds are descendants of dinosaurs. It's always a pleasure to see Goldfinches in the garden and they bring such a delightful twittering as well. It's often surrprising what turns up in gardens during the winter. We hav...

No room for manoeuvre here, as I only took one shot of this species, when it took a subordinate role during my search for Brown Hairstreaks along the Roman Road onto Otmoor, Oxon.

Re: Duke of Burgundy - Favourite Photo of 2018

This was a special butterflying day for me. As I described in my diary , my son and I first photographed this species at Bradenham Woods in 1990. In the intervening years, the species died out at the site but has now been re-introduced successfully, so we returned this year for another visit togethe...

I only seem to have pointed my camera at one of these butterflies this last season, so choosing has not been a problem. It's a pretty 'average' specimen - some wear on the fringes, a tear in one wing - a representative of the 'common man' :) CommonBlue2018.jpg Lets hope this species continues to be ...

This one was taken during a Spring walk amongst the Bluebells at the BBOWT Warburg reserve near Henley on Thames. Despite the distractions from a Grand-child, I grabbed this shot of a Dingy Skipper, looking very strongly marked in the bright sunshine:

I had a memorable morning at Bucknell Wood, near Silverstone, on 3rd July, when It was very warm and sunny. I nearly missed seeing this species this year. I failed to spot any, during my walk along the Roman Road from Beckley onto Otmoor, Oxon. Re: Brown Argus - Favourite Photo of 2018

I rarely set out with the aim of seeing a Brown Argus but it is always a pleasure when one turns up. They often surprise me with their small-ness and the contrast between the pearl grey underside and the rich chocolate of their upper-side wings. This one was at Aston Rowant on a day when my 'target'...
