Re: Hilary

A few butterflies out in the garden today despite the cold wind, Orange Tips, Green Veined White and Small White. I saw a smalliish female Orange Tip laying eggs on Rocket, which is a bit awkward as I was going to clear that area of the garden. Still I can leave the Rocket and see how they get on. T...

Re: Gardening discussion forums

Hello I can't suggest a forum as I havn't ever found one that I would find very useful. But as you have just moved in and will probably have a bit of time finding out what is already there, it may be an idea to join the local Wildlife Trust, most of which have wildlife gardening groups who will know...

Re: A field trip to see Orange-Tip butterflies

Great. I'm glad you filmed the 'failures', its comforting to know even the experts can draw a blank - at least on the target species. Also very entertaining and I look forward to the next episode.

Re: jackz432r

Given the forecast I hope it can hang on for a few more days! Barton on Sea cliff area looks enticing. In my garden and local area I've also yet to see a Red Admiral and, excepting Brimstones(earlier) and Orange Tips, most of the others I have seen only one or two individuals so far this year. Dismal!

Re: Hilary

I must stop interfering with the natural order of things. Just before the 'deluge' it clouded over and I saw a female Orange Tip settle on a chive bud . An hour or so later I went out with my brolly to see if she was still there, she was. As I stood there it started hailing and I felt obliged to sta...

It was good to see the Oxslips in the wild. Hope they recover their numbers. I grew some from seed a few years back and they have spread very quickly and are a hit with the bees.

Re: hideandseek

I liked the photos of the tent creation. I have found these on nettles, but don't know what they turn into. I get alot of Small Magpie and Mother of Pearl moths in the Nettles, but looking at the UK moths site, their larva are green. Hope you find out what they are, it would be nice to know!

Re: Hilary

As I was watching the newly emerged Orange Tip I also found out at least one of the place where a Peacock (who frequently suns its self on the path) spends the night; at 5.20pm it did a quick lap of the greenhouse and straight down to a cavity by a fern made by last years dead leaves.

Good and bad news; the Orange Tip has hatched but just as the weather is set to get cold. Re: Unseasonal flora

I have seen hawthorn flowering along part of one hedge on my route to work here in south somerset. There looks to be nothing different about this hedge than any other and so I have been wondering if it was a particularly eary flowering form that found its way into that hedge. I'll have to look out f...

Re: jackz432r

I liked the pictures of the speckled wood caterpillars. It must be quite a burden of responsibility trying to keep the out of season ones going! I have never seen one in 'the wild' and wondered if the are more likely to feed at night? My camera is I think what is termed a 'shoot and point' (panosoni...

The Orange Tip crysalis, that I thought I had 'rescued' from wasps last year, and thought was dead because it apppeared empty as the light seemed to shine right through it, has started to darken inside at both of the pointed ends. There may be some hope for it! I do hope so because the only caterpil...

Re: Spring Flowers for butterflies

It was warm and sunny today and I half expected to see a Brimstone out and about! Was quite glad none turned up in my garden because there is nothing much for them to eat. I have seen Aubrieta well into flower in one or two gardens (not mine), But Primroses are starting to flower and they do very oc...

This last week has seen the Scarlet Tiger caterpillars up and eating. Think I will have to move some more Forgetmenots up from the veg garden as there are not many in the garden and they have chomped alot of them well down.

Re: Shameful article by Ian Liddell-Grainger

Just what exactly is this MPs motivation for his clumsy attempt to descredit the generally popular 'conservation' movement (B.C. in particular) by using the trusty tool of ridicule? I liked Wurzel's earlier comments, and have no doubt that Ian Liddell-Grainger and/or his chums would like to get thei...

Re: Targets: Brown Hairstreak & Clouded Yellow

Given my limited experience of B. Hairstreaks I wonder if any of you had simalar experience of the behaviour I 've seen: Half of my 6 sightings were 'accidental' in that I wasn't looking for them but they were right under my nose, in my line of sight. Looking for them specifically hasn't improved my...
