Re: Pearl-bordered Fritillary- Favourite Photo of 2018

This one has a little more black on it than usual: pb-fr - 1.jpg Abbots Wood, May 13 2018, 4.30pm I was pleased with this next one as I specifically arrived on site in the early evening to look for roosting specimens. I stayed longer than even Neil Hulme and was rewarded by this image: pb-fr - 2.jpg...

Re: Painted Lady - Favourite Photo of 2018

I was at Mill Hill the same time as Vince and got pretty much the same underside shot of a lovely fresh female:

Re: Orange-tip - Favourite Photo of 2018

The first picture (male) was one of those lucky moments. The butterfly was flitting over a patch of cuckoo flower and kept on settling, but only for a second or two. I was getting lots of blurry shots of it taking off but nothing else. Finally it settled just a little bit longer, maybe 3 or 4 second...

Re: Marsh Fritillary - Favourite Photo of 2018

This one was taken on my annual pilgrimage from Brighton to Cotley Hill in Wiltshire:

It's well worth the trip as Cotley Hill is a great site with all the spring downland species on view, including Adonis Blue.

Re: Marbled White - Favourite Photo of 2018

This is one of my favourite species, and very photogenic as long as you don't try chasing them on a hot summer's day! The first photo was taken as it settled down to roost on a magical Midsummer's Day evening: mw - 1 (1).jpg Madgeland Wood, June 21 2018, 7.46pm and the second warming up in the early...

Re: Large White - Favourite Photo of 2018

How things change in a year! Last year (2017), at the end of July, the Knepp estate was awash with male Brown Hairstreaks nectaring on thistles. This year I paid a couple of visits around the same time but didn't see any, one of the only photos I got was this Large White. I think maybe the reason fo...

Re: Large Blue - Favourite Photo of 2018

I too visited Daneway in scorching heat, on Monday 25th of June. It must have been about 32C, and the Large Blues were very flighty. I managed to grab one decent shot of a female that looks remarkably similar to the one Wurzel photographed! I spent the night in a nearby hotel and despite being more ...

Re: Green-veined White - Favourite Photo of 2018

I never get many pictures of common Whites because they are very fluttery and I have to admit I don't pursue them with the same level of dedication as, for example, a Purple Emperor! But I did get one nice photo this year at Fairhaven Water Garden in Norfolk: gv-ls - 1.jpg July 31st 2018, 1.06pm Che...

Re: Grizzled Skipper - Favourite Photo of 2018

I was extremely fortunate with this species this year, getting some nice images. The first one at Cotley Hill is in surprisingly good condition for the end of May. I really like the "soft light" on this one, which was due to it being cloudy but quite bright at the time. gs - 1.jpg Cotley H...

Re: Duke of Burgundy - Favourite Photo of 2018

I was quite fortunate with this species this year. The first photo is backlit on a lovely sunny afternoon, the other two were taken on a cool grey overcast morning. I enjoy the challenge of looking for butterflies sitting quietly in cloudy weather! dob - 1.jpg Kithurst Hill, May 6th 2018, 4.25pm dob...

Re: Dark Green Fritillary - Favourite Photo of 2018

I never have much luck with this species. Normally I just see them zooming past at 90mph. I stumbled across this nice fresh one hiding in the grass on a cool and windy day. Next year I must try harder, maybe get up early (not my strong point!) and look for some at roost. dgf - 1.jpg Friston Gallops,...

I didn't have much luck with this species in 2017, so I was pleased to get a couple of decent shots this year, one basking on a glorious sunny evening, and the other still at roost on a cool and misty morning. ds - 1.jpg Mill Hill, 8th May 2018, 6.25pm ds - 2.jpg Kithurst flower meadow, 12th May 201...

Re: Black Hairstreak - Favourite Photo 2018

I was just about to book a hotel in Thrapston (near Glapthorn Cow Pasture) in order to go and see the Black Hairstreak when the news of their discovery at Ditchling Common came in. That is only 5 miles away from where I live so I decided to go there instead! This individual was seen on the Saturday ...

Re: Brimstone - Favourite Photo 2018

I saw plenty of Brimstones flying around in 2018 but not many sitting in photogenic poses, perhaps because of the hot weather. My best photo of this species was in the spring, of an ovipositing female. If you zoom in on the photo you can see a couple of eggs just below the tip of the abdomen. I have...
