Semtember in Slovenian Alps and southern Croatia
Hi, I'm heading south in the half of Semtemper (hopefully a bit earlier). Obviously by car - no big deal from the Czech Rep. :D Is there still a good time for butterflies? I mean I woudn't recommend butterflying in CZE, because there is already Autumn knocking on the door in September, but those two...

Thanks. Also, note that no swear word has been used in the last post, for the first time since the stone age!

Re: Marek (The Annoying Czech)
It's getting late, some frequently visited places are starting to be slightly boring. Nothing interesting or fresh left in my village, so I went back to Large Coppers . They are only stunning when fresh which is a rare condition in their case. http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/5998/ohnivacekcernocarn...

Re: Marek (The Annoying Czech)
This update will be very optimistic, as well as fairly annoying :D (One Large Copper photo included :)) I just visited three Wallachian villages: Novy Hrozenkov, Halenkov and Huslenky, being impressed with Losový Reservation with characteristic traditional landscape elements and generally well prese...

Re: Marek (The Annoying Czech)
After 15 more or less sunny days, today's weather went wrong... probably for one day only. Good time for another bla-bla-blahs :D I just finished exploring of five faunistic squares. In August I found Large Coppers almost everywhere and also improved my searching for "Duskies" (6-7 colonie...

Re: Marek (The Annoying Czech)
I counted 629 butterflies overall during 8th transectual mapping. The winner was icarus (230), followed by pamphilus (163) and jurtina (116). Three Lycaena dispar imagos. To vary work and fun, I packed off into the mountains with no clap-net but only the camera. Here's the proof I meant my last post...

Re: Marek (The Annoying Czech)
Why not
And it's not that great, could be sharper, with no need of sharpening in PS.
I have to find a girlfriend, who would keep the flower against the wind. Or buy a slave.

Re: Marek (The Annoying Czech)
Last photo from eastern Beskydy Mts. - a Silver-washed Fritillary , a reasonably widespread and common species, although rather mountainous. http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/2969/perletovecstribropasek2.jpg During the ongoing monitoring of my neighbourhood, northern descents of the Beskydy Mts. se...

Re: Marek (The Annoying Czech)
A certain job order sent me to eastern Beskydy Mts., kind of like Wallachia from the older posts, but slightly less grazed, more hygrophilous and slightly more mountainous (the highest peak - 1060). I succeeded as an explorer and butterfly conversation missionary :D but often failed as a photographe...

Re: Marek (The Annoying Czech)
Thanks for the clarification, Mike. I'm very talented regarding swear words in many languages, trust me!
No language or other problems with "Duskies" and "Largies"? I've always hoped it might take a root

Re: Marek (The Annoying Czech)
I'm presently following only the "Burnet Blues", a species harder to find than I initially thought. Sometimes I saw thousands of burnets but no butterflies: July/August mowing harms them a lot, while succession seems to harm the burnets in the long term. I have three colonies of "Dusk...

Re: Marek (The Annoying Czech)
Surrounded by really high Great Burnets in a ditch, I found a colony of "Duskies" in my faunistic square yesterday. As 45th species for 2012 season. Despite I got some Great Burnet distribution maps, it was still a serious piece of a hard work; unlike Large Coppers , I feel Dusky Large Blu...

Re: Marek (The Annoying Czech)
You're welcome. Photos enclosed below comes from monitoring of neighbouring faunistic squares. My second White-letter Hairstreak this year. Old, hungry and tame. http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/4796/ostruhacekjilmovy201207.jpg I found Weaver's Fritillary instead of Apollo in the old stone pit of St...

Re: Padfield
In what altitude does your Apollos live, Pad?
I visited an old stone pit in Stramberk, CZ (11th July), but all the animals were gone for good for this season. Altitude less than 500.

Re: Marek (The Annoying Czech)
This post includes a potentially annoying photos of various exotic species, so perhaps make a good tea first :D I visited two best mountains on butterflies - White Carpathians (maintained orchid meadows, former farm woodlands) and Vsetinske Mts. in Wallachia (extensive sheep pastures, often in heavy...

Re: Marek (The Annoying Czech)
I was doing my transect yesterday, counting 204 butterflies of 18 species (despite some mowed parts), including 63 Ringlets , 32 Meadow Browns, 32 Lesser Marbled Fritillaries , as well as 1 Large Copper and 1 Queen of Spain I didn't expect in this time. Meadow Brown is basically outbreak year by yea...

My transectual numbers in Central Europe are following: May 2 - 44 ex. (winning species: Map) May 18 - 133 ex. (winning species: Small Heath) May 31 - 111 ex. (winning species: Common Blue) June 15 - 76 ex. (winning species: Lesser Marbled Fritillary) But I have a colleague with app. ten times lower...
