Re: Purple Emperor - Favourite Photo of 2021

Not the best of photos but, as it's the first time I saw this species, it's a memorable one for me. This was in Bernwood Forest.

A Small Tortoiseshell made a brief appearance in our Bucks garden this afternoon. Basking in the weak sunshine on one of the house walls.

Re: Duke of Burgundy - Favourite Photo of 2020

Lucky to have a few small Dukes sites within walking distance of our house. So during the first lockdown this was where I headed for my permitted exercise, not only to see them, but to survey for numbers. My photo shows one that landed near when eating my lunch at the top of the hill.

Re: Orange-tip query

Hi Vince,

Thanks very much for the advice. I'll do as you say and attach the stem it's on to a better food source.

We've also got one on Cardamine heptaphylla which has demolished the top and now munching on the leaves.

Orange-tip query

We've got several Orange-tip larva approaching their final install but am wondering about the one in the attached photos. There's not much left on the Garlic Mustard it's on and am asking if it should be moved to another plant that's in better condition, obviously one that isn't occupied. Thanks, Ni...

Only one Painted Lady visited our garden this year, 17th August, luckily the camera was to hand.

Re: Duke of Burgundy - Favourite Photo of 2018

The Bradenham Woods site Mike mentions in his post is just up the road from where we live, so I usually visit a few times whilst the Dukes are flying. This one was from 7th May this year.

Re: Moth ID

Hi David, the lower one is probably Pyrausta despicata. I wouldn't like to say for certain as there may be similar species given the location.

Re: Scottish Moths

I think the one from North Shian is Bactra lancealana, quite a variable species. The other looks like a pyralid but not sure which one.

Hi Sylvie, the closest I can get is Buff Ermine. The markings are a good match but your one looks to have lost most of its bristles!

Re: Some IDs please

Hi Chris,

If you were in the UK I'd be confident in saying it's Helcystogramma rufescens: http://mothdissection.co.uk/species.php ... _rufescens

However bearing in mind where you are there maybe confusion species.

Nigel
