I realised I missed one:

So it was actually 19 species.

Re: Wurzel

It's no fun when your target species is waiting for you in the car park. You have to work a little for your reward :-)

Nice pictures of the copper and the SWF.

Re: dilettante

Sunday 10th July 2011 I was going to go to Bedford Purlieus to try for a photo of White-letter Hairstreaks, but when I read NickB's report of Dark Green Fritillaries at Fleam Dyke, I decided I'd go looking for them instead, as Fleam Dyke is much closer to where I live, and I've yet to see DGF in re...

Thanks Phil.

I had seen there was a BC meet there today, but was unable to attend.

Advice please: Bedford Purlieus for WLH

I'm thinking of going to Bedford Purlieus tomorrow. Can anyone advise on whether I'll be too late for White Letter Hairstreaks? If I understood some directions sent in a PM, I need to park at the blue pin on this map , and look along the ride between the red pins for a good chance of WLH at low leve...

Re: dilettante

Saturday 9th July 2011 Earlier in the week I went to Magog Down just outside Cambridge to look for Essex Skippers. I was fairly sure I'd seen some, but didn't have my camera so couldn't get independent confirmation. So today I went back to get some photographic evidence for the good people of ukbut...

Re: Canon 500D video problem

Some DSLRs overheat if shooting long video sequences and shut themselves down. This should be after tens of minutes rather than seconds though. Did the camera feel particularly warm? Does it apply at all resolutions or only at high res (e.g. 1080p if the 500D does that)? The overheat theory could be...

Re: Sussex Kipper

Amazing pictures. And congratulations on the new arrival. On Friday (1st July) I received a text from Matthew, who had just arrived at Fermyn and quickly located the specimen. When I met Matthew there on the Saturday, he also showed me pictures of a rather impressive Comma aberrant he'd seen there o...

Monday 4th July 2011 Having read that Chalkhill Blues were out at Devil's Dyke and elsewhere, I decided to check out Therfield Heath after work. After cycling home, I loaded up the car and headed straight out, arriving around 7:30pm, sun getting low in the sky but still quite warm and still. It was...

Re: Where have all the butterflies gone?

Came back home via Gamlingay Wood on the Beds/Cambs border and saw fourteen species in one hour including silver- washed fritillaries which are new to the site and loads of skippers- large, small and Essex. Marbled whites very good. Could you share your list? Gamlingay Woods is quite near me, but I...

Re: July 2011

I'm no expert (I've never knowingly seen an Essex Skipper!) ... I just went down to Magog Down outside Cambridge to look at skippers. I saw many small skippers, and some that I'm pretty sure were Essex. I wish I could be 100% sure! Annoyingly, I'd brought my camera to work, but left the memory card...

I'm no expert (I've never knowingly seen an Essex Skipper!), but aren't those antennae the wrong shape for Essex? I thought they were always more club-shaped?

A few Chalkhill Blues at Therfield (Royston) Heath this evening, plus Marbled Whites, Meadow Browns, and a Small Tortoiseshell. Pics to follow in my diary page, probably tomorrow.

Re: dilettante

Here's a reply I just sent in PM to another member: Have a look at this map . Park at the green pin, opposite the Gliding club. (I didn't, and wasted some time trying to find my bearings). From there, follow the track into Fermyn Wood, but if you just want PEs, keep going. You'll emerge from the woo...
