Re: dilettante

Wednesday 3rd August, 2011 While the kids were playing in the sand dunes at Haverigg on the Cumbrian coast, I had a wander through the scrubby dunes path along the coast. The sheltered hollows provided little heat traps that seemed ideal for butterflies and flowering plants.  My first find was a Sm...

Re: dilettante

Sunday 30th July, 2011 I arrived with my family at our holiday location yesterday, and was pleased to be able to see Arnside Knott from my bedroom window! So that's where we've been today. I didn't see any Northern Brown Argus, and the three fritillaries I saw didn't settle at all for confirmation ...

Not yawn-inducing at all! A lucky moment that you managed to take advantage of and capture beautifully.

Re: Brown Hairstreak

Fantastic pics of a beatuiful specimen, Zonda.

I suspect Brown Hairstreak will be spending another year on my yet-to-see list.

Re: dilettante

Saturday 23rd July 2011 Searching the Sites pages here suggested I might find Walls at Over Cutting, so I decided to combine a trip there with some exercise for the family. I loaded four bikes onto the car, and we drove to Oakington, from where we would cycle the newly paved cycle track alongside t...

Re: Arnside Knott

Excellent! I'm going to be there in a week's time, so that's sounding good. Hoping there may still be HBF around, but Scotch Argus and Northern Brown Argus will do me nicely. :D

Re: dilettante

Wednesday 20th July, 2011 Having been frustrated by the weather at the weekend and unable to go butterflying, I decided to take Wednesday afternoon off work when I saw the forecast was for dry, if not exactly warm or sunny, weather. I still wanted to visit Bedford Purlieus in search of White-letter...

Re: Lens Cleaning

Lens Pens are pretty good. Or just a microfibre cloth. Dust and scratches on a lens can cause flare, but otherwise are probably not worth worrying about too much: see this for an extreme example!

Re: Forum Images

I'm having problems with the images in Google Chrome: First, if I open a species page such as http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/species.php?species=camilla , I get no scroll bars. But worse, if I click on any of the thumbnails, the image just shrinks and disappears. Sometimes it works and I get the lar...

I think the middle one is a male (from abdomen shape and there is a faint sex brand), but I could be wrong.

Re: Arnside Knott

I've just noticed (!) that I'm going to be very near Arnside Knott for the first week in August. What are my chances of HBF, NBA or Scotch Argus at that time? Or Large Heath at Meathop Moss or elsewhere?

Re: Advice please: Bedford Purlieus for WLH

Sounds great. I didn't make it this weekend (went to Fleam Dyke instead - see my diary entry), and doubt I will next weekend, so probably have missed my chance for this year. Unless I take some time off work this week. Hmm... :D
