Thanks for the confirmation Lee.
I'm working my way through a batch of photo's at the moment, so here's another from Honfleur. This one's a Red lacewing (Cethosia Biblis) found in India and Nepal.

Re: Mayenne, France
Hi Lee I have to say there is certainly the "thrill of the chase" in the wild, though it was still lovely to see the exotic species and have a chance of catching them on camera! Here's (I think) a Map Butterfly. This one I literally caught sight of, took one picture and it was gone. I didn...

Re: Mayenne, France
I wasn't sure how Butterfly houses were viewed on this website. Obviously purists would like to see the Butterflies in the wild, but such exotic species are beyond most of our means. If supporting such ventures encourages their conservation, I guess it must be for the good. Anyway, here's another cl...

Re: Mayenne, France
Now, turning to the exotic, here's one from the "Naturospace" Butterfly house in Honfleur. It's a Tiger Longwing (Heliconius Hecale) from Costa Rica.

Re: Mayenne, France
Thanks. I originally wrote Speckled wood and deleted it after checking the three books I have as none clearly looked like it.

Re: Mayenne, France
Can anyone help identify this Butterfly? It looks a little like a Wall Brown. Not sure if it is a non-UK species, or perhaps a variant.

Re: Mayenne, France
I returned from Mayenne yesterday. If I had tried to visit somewhere with an abundance of Butterflies I would probably of failed. As a newcomer to this hobby I was pleasantly surprised. I saw 20-30 species of Butterfly and Moth. The lovely weather seems to have brought out some species early. This C...

Re: March 2011
Another walk in Langdon Hills revealed two Commas in what appeared to be some sort of courtship flight (if they do that?), they were accompanied by a Peacock at times. Also saw another Brimstone. A good day!

Re: March 2011
Saw a comma today which obligingly sat still for a few seconds for me to capture. Not so lucky with a Brimstone though, too fast!

Re: Advice on best plants to search out
You may not see very much there this early in the season Rich, so you may be better advised to wait for a few weeks yet. On the left hand side of the homepage is a "What's Flying" section where you can see what species may be around. Another month or so and the season will kick off in ear...

Re: Advice on best plants to search out
I was within spitting distance of Devils dyke last weekend. Damn, a missed opportunity. However, I plan to return to Wicken Fen this weekend. Perhaps, I'll swing by the Dyke and check it out. We have membership of the National Trust, so we'll be on the lookout for any Butterfly conservation schemes ...

Thanks for the replies. Sorry I cannot help with the perspective, it was an opportunist shot with no thought other than to capture it.

Re: ? Green-veined white
Thanks. That it hasn't got its wings opened doesn't help novices like me. It appears to have several dark spots, but it could be speckled underwing rather than a spot above.

? Green-veined white
I wonder if anyone can confirm the ID of this butterfly. It looks like a green-veined white, but I'm unsure. It was taken last August, at Horsey in Norfolk. Thanks.

I'm going to the Mayenne region of France in April. Any suggestions as to what species of Butterfly to look for, and where. Thanks

Re: Advice on best plants to search out
I'm a newbie too. Don't know if this is useful to you. I recently got an e.mail from the Big Butterfly count people. They recommended buying a "Meadow mixture" seed pack. When I checked out the link supplied (unless I read it wrong) it was going to cost a whopping £10+ to have 1 pack of se...

I'm using a "point and shoot", Lumix DMC-FS7. Not expensive (I paid about £110), but for my needs a great little camera. I took this on holiday last summer, 2 Aug. The details attached to the image are - f/2.8, ISO 80, Exposure 1/250sec

Re: March 2011
Just been for a walk in Langdon Hills nature reserve (Basildon, Essex). Two more Brimstones to add to the list. Got a photo but, sadly, too poor to share.
