Pete, Many congratulations and well deserved. An inspiration you are to many if not all of us lesser mortals.

Re: Announcing UK Butterflies TV!

Pete, Very inspiring ideas. Planning to do something with video this coming Spring Summer. Northern Brown Argus and Small Blue as the main protagonists for a film. I have always avoided it in general simply because of the extra work involved in editing especially. This short interview has pushed me ...

Re: August 2016

In reply to Jack, Guy and David re Small T Shell ab. I can only surmise from my observations that this may be down to the weather conditions perhaps. We have had a really horrific summer on the east coast of Scotland and I did note that Small T Shell Cats were very irregular when it came to instar s...

Thank you Trevor, I will try my best to find some time to keep posting on here. Here are a few more Comma, Small Tort and Peacock as well as a Gorse Shield with the new 750D and a few various from 2015 with the old 600D.

Re: IAC

It has been quite some time since I attempted to update this diary. Bit of a losing battle really. There comes a time when you find that updating blogs, Facebook and Twitter pages can become a full time job. The month of March has been very kind to me after yet another miserable winter. The Comma ar...

Re: Northern Brown Argus - Favourite Photo of 2015

The nice thing about the Northern Brown Argus in my area, apart from the fact that we have plenty of them, is that there is a great interest in them from locals and those who make Butterfly pilgrimages of many hundreds of miles. I have been very busy relaying information to visitors from all over th...

Re: 2015 Butterfly winners and losers

Yes, it has been all very localised indeed. Believe this or not, Wall Brown were the biggest mover and shaker in the Butterfly counts for East Berwickshire. And when I say East Berwickshire, as local as that sounds. I do mean only certain areas of the Berwickshire coast. Numbers in August were bibli...

Re: Interesting Common Blue ab

Thanks guys, I am very green that I did not see this myself despite a brief search of the area it was last observed. I have seen some cracking variants of Common Blue females over the years, but this one, as soon as I saw it...well...a once in a blue butterfly moon affair. I might still get lucky an...

Re: Skipper ID Scotland

Small Skipper are now one of our most commonly seen Butterflies in the south east of Scotland. It is very good news that they may be increasing in the south west. Large Skipper have always done better in the south west of Scotland, though they are very strong here in the south east ,there is a reluc...

Interesting Common Blue ab

Hi all, A friend of mine recently found this on the Berwickshire coast in the Borders. I am pretty sure its a female? I have never seen anything quite like it before. This one is a likely second brooder. I realise abs are common place with this species, all I am asking for is anything more any of yo...

Re: Spring 2015 Competition

 Brilliant, I really appreciate the pointers Marek. You are absolutely right on all counts. I probably had better photos to post for the Spring competition. Its not easy being critical of your own photos. It is good to hear some honest criticism for a change...people can be very well mannered a...

Re: June 2015

With pretty middling conditions up here in south eastern Scotland things can be still quite lively at times in any warmer spells. I have spent an insane amount of time chasing the Small Blues around the Berwickshire cliffs at Burnmouth and Eyemouth since mid May...and now they are almost being ignor...

Re: Spring 2015 Competition

To avoid ruining Czech-English international relations Hello Marek, I notice you had a side swipe at my effort as well....and I am no Englishman. We Scots are a canny bunch and take competition a little lighter than most. As a Scotsman I am over the moon to be given 5th place. Constant failure to w...

Large Sawfly...bizarre insect

Hi all, Not a butterfly or moth, but none the less interesting. This was sent to me for identification a few hours ago from a coastal site in Berwickshire South East Scotland. It looks like a Sawfly...but I have not seen anything like it before. Observer said it was approx 2cm in length. Any help he...

Re: Aricia artaxerxes ssp. artaxerxes

How long is their flight period? David, June, July. They can still be around into August and on extremely late sites into September though that is quite exceptional. June is the best time for fresh adult males and July for females, after that it is a bit of a pick n mix. You some times get lucky fi...
